RetroArch version 1.9.2 released, brings multi soft-patching support, improves GBA emulation on Vita

unnamed-768x432.png

Emulation frontend RetroArch just got a new update, bringing the program to version 1.9.2. This update adds some nice quality of life features and performance increases on certain platforms. File load times and RetroArch startup times are shorter across the board, and GBA emulator gpSP now works much better on the PlayStation Vita, as it's been optimized heavily since 1.9.1. In other news, 1.9.2 also adds multi soft-patching support, which as the name implies, will apply multiple patches to your ROM files on the fly, so long as they have a matching file name and are in the same folder as the base game, making it easier to deal with games that have lots of patches, such as romhacks or translations. A formatting example is shown in the example below.

Contra (Japan).nes
Contra (Japan).ips # Applied first
Contra (Japan).ips1 # Applied second
Contra (Japan).ups2 # Applied third

Retroarch became the first step on emulation for many people.
It is good to see them active, they even reached steam not long ago.
In this version they did not addressed the biggest drawback for me (the interface). But it is possible to fix that on the user side anyway.

Imo Retroarch will never be as good as dedicated emulators. Maybe if they sorted out that truly overcomplicated gui then id be more inclined to give it more of a try.

Isn't this supposed to be ips2?
lol it seems that is written like that everywhere even the github so maybe it's correct (idk i never did rom patching shit)
It’s because it supports multiple patch types (IPS/BPS/UPS) and as long as they’re in order and correctly named they will work in sequence.

the example is a working sequence.

gPSP doesn't crash randomly anymore (albeit still limited 3D compatibility) and has some additional features, it generally runs non-hacked 2D games quite well. mGBA is also here now with better compatibility/accuracy but can't maintain full speed in many titles.

We already have a standalone GBA emulator on Vita, is a port of mGBA and works quite well, it even gets updated when mGBA does.

I like the new features on gPSP, except for the frameskip options, this is because the older version of gpsp has a better frameskip option that has manual, automatic, off (this option didnt make the image choppy in the games as in this new version that they implemented fixed interval and the games run choppy), you can test this by putting fixed interval and set frameskip to 1 it will be choppy.

RetroArch shines on powerful hardware and unfortunately the Vita is not the PS3 that happens to be the bare minimum to make RetroArch tolerable.

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."
