These days on the web I use a different credential than my real name, not because I'm hiding it, but because I prefer it. Yet, I can't see myself changing it out of respect for my parents so there's that conundrum.

So, has anyone done it? How do you feel about it in the long run?

I have not changed my name, but would love to either:
  • Get rid of my middle name since it's rather inconvenient to write on all legal documents here
  • Take my grandfather's name as my middle name. Inconvenience be damned, it's an awesome name

I don't know that I would view such a thing as disrespectful to my parents.

I generally try never to use my real name online, would encourage that for everybody in basically all circumstances as well and look very unfavourably upon those that encourage the opposite.

Beyond that in real life... I have known people for decades before that go by nicknames and other names, many times I only find out if I meet one of their childhood friends/parents (though even that is not always the case), go to a wedding, are helping out with some official document or go to their funeral.

I don't like my first name at all, and my last name is always misspelled unless I spell it out somewhere. But it's mine and I'm keeping it.

Perhaps I should note that when I went into the local S&M scene, most people refered to each other by their nicknames as well. Same with gaming, really: I'm so used to "Taleweaver" it might as well be my real name.

I've done it, and it was definitely for the better. Although I did keep my last name (but that will be gone sometime this year anyway)

Both my mom and I hate my dad. My mom changed her name back to her maiden name and I changed my last name to something new that my wife and I agreed on before getting married to start a new family name.

I changed my name the year I was old enough to receive my ID Card; it was both a Regional and Cultural issue.

I am Eurasian and the name on my Birth Certificate is from Culture A of Parent A that does not have the concept of Surnames whereas my complete name came after said Certificate was finalised and added a First Name and Surname from Culture B and Parent B, to make it easier for me to travel and be understood by the European side of my ancestry and the Western world in general.

I love my name, but my mom has been pushing me to change my middle name. Mostly because she wrote/chose it still very much in a rush at the hospital. She forgot she needed to come up with a middle name, so she picked a “cute” one, but was so frazzled she misspelled it...pretty badly. There’s an extra “n” and an extra “l” but I’ve never minded. It’s kind of quirky that way.

That's interesting. You're required to use your middle name on legal documents in your area? We only operate on first and last name basis, I rarely see a middle name requirement.

Wouldn't change it, and most people don't even call me by my name anyway, it's either a nickname or abbreviation of my name.

my last name I wouldn't change either, however I always have to spell it out because there's multiple ways people write it, and most of the time it's incorrect, which is annoying when it's about something important but oh well.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

    Booo.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb

    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.

Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
