I gotta say I never liked the design of the U.S. SNES because it looked like a bootleg and some kids toy whereas the EUR/JPN SNES you can tell it's a sequel of the NES. Plus, the cartridge design of the EUR/JPN version look better (what I'd expect a genuine cartridge to look like) while the U.S. version resembles somewhat a LEGO put together.

And.. I just hate the purple buttons. The colored buttons on the EUR/JPN just look more appealing and memorable, as well as colorful.

P.S. I grew up with the original design of the SNES, but I very well could have preferred the U.S. had it been better.

So, what's the answer overall?
I prefer what I grew up with (US). It's probably just nostalgia, but I do like the muscle car aesthetic of it. I read somewhere that was what the designer was going for -- trying to appeal to the US market by conveying CPU power with the muscle car inspiration.

As a negative, I do agree that the purple buttons were a mistake, they should have been light-grey like the eject button.

JAP/EUR design.
There's not even a discussion.

I live in the US, I was in my mid-late 20's during the SNES/Genesis era. I owned an SNES then. I own two Super Famicoms now, and one Super Famicom Jr. which is an unfortunate ugly wedge of a thing but has great video signal (I modded for s-vid and RGB).

I agree, no contest.

Nostalgia dictates that you go with what you owned back then, so naturally, I prefer the american design. But I agree I would have preferred colored buttons to the purple ones. Talking about the buttons, I think it was a great idea to have the X and Y buttons concave, and the A and B convex. Was it the same with the european controllers?

No, the EUR/JPN SNES didn't have that concave feel.

While I agree that the Super Famicom is a much nicer looking design than the NA SNES, to say it "you can tell it's a sequel to the NES" is wrong - it was a 'sequel' to the Famicom, which looks nothing like the NES.

But definitely the EUR version is way cooler and better.

Who knows? Maybe if I had grow with the EUR I'd think the US version looks better?

Yellowness. Something to do with ageing and if you keep cartridges in a shelf against light then they'll get discolored even faster like I've seen in some stores. I don't even say anything because.. why bother, the clerk/owner probably wouldn't care either.

Also, for future reference, when making a line in an image editor, usually, pressing Shift makes you draw in a straight line.

Easy pick: Europe.

I'm quite sure I'd be jealous of the design if I didn't grew up with it. That purple & grey is just...not my taste.

(not that I really care how a console or a computer looks, as far as I'm concerned. But since asked, I'll share my opinion :) ).
