Those stamps are a nice touch. But erm...who buys stamps these days?(1) Even postcards often have these pre-printed, if they're still being bought in the first place. (on my last vacations, my family and friends knew almost better what we were doing than I was...it's weird having a girlfriend who basically blogs or pictures everything on the internet :P ). It's almost retro in and of itself...

As for the OP title...I...choose to have a different opinion. Not to say that Team 17, Psygnosis and (especially) rare aren't/weren't powerhouses (I had no idea they were British in the first place)

...but they're no Larian studios. So sorry, mates. Belgium's got the better games here. B-)

(Japan? Since when do they make video games? What? Shigero Miyamoto is from over there? When did THAT happen? :creep: )

(1): okay, okay: my girlfriend and me recently bought a bunch because those "it's a girl! :D" cards have to be sent out by physical mail.

UK's game making prowess was gigantic in the early days of the PSX:
WipeOut, the Adventures of Lomax by Psygnosis
Destruction Derby by Reflections

and quite a few others games and developers...

Those were the days. Creativity was everywhere.

haven't heard of psygnosis before, and i haven't played many of team17's games

You’ve never heard of Psygnosis? Man, I’m getting old :D They eventually became Sony Studios Liverpool when Sony bought them up from the success of Wipeout.

But before that they were best known for publishing many stunning games, such as the classic Agony (Amiga, by Art & Magic), Lemmings by DMA Designs, Shadow of the Beast by Reflections and so on.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

How do you figure that when its widely acknowledged the first ever video game was made by William Higinbotham from New York in 1958.

Pong may well be the first commercial home video game, but in typical Wikipedia fashion, it was far from the first. The first commercial video game, period, was the infamous Computer Space arcade game by Nutting Associates in 1971.

Pong, wasn’t even the first Pong game. That honour goes to William Higinbotham and Robert Dvorak, with Tennis for Two, using an oscilloscope as the screen during an open day at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1958.

If I remember correctly, aside from experimenting in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, the first actual interactive video game was Alexander Douglas’s OXO from 1952.

If you want a bit more detail, have a read of an article I wrote on Pong, it has a lot more detail of the early history of video games.

Actually, to quote, you said: “How do you figure that when its widely acknowledged the first ever video game was made by William Higinbotham from New York in 1958.”

I’m just saying, it was definitely not the first ever video game. OXO beat it out by 6 years. And it
Was at the University of Cambridge, in the UK.

Most people usually don't count OXO or other such programs of the time as video games due to their lack of moving or real-time updating graphics. Thus why William Higinbotham is considered to be the first person to have made a video game. I guess though it down to peoples own point of view on the subject.

That's interesting, I've never heard of OXO before. I guess it all comes down to the interpretation of what a modern videogame is. By that means, the tennis for two would fit most descriptions, but OXO is a game, just translated to the virtual screen.

In either case, I greatly disagree with the title lol. I feel the "best games" would be games that have made huge impacts in popular culture, pong would be one and it is remembered by many today. And well, the list goes on with stuff like Zelda or the likes, that would qualify as the "best games"

I've never considered moving, or real-time graphics to be a fundamental part of a video-game. Hell if that were the case then god knows what dozens of games I played on my Spectrum, various Commodores and so on were, there were certainly many that didn't have moving graphics.

But, even with an odd classification such as moving or real-time images, OXO did display real-time interactive imagery. The screen updated, in real-time, to reflect the choices you made. It wasn't a static screen which never changed.

And OXO (noughts and crosses) was an actual game long before 1952, when it made the transition from being drawn in the dirt, or on a piece of paper, to running on a computer, with the output on a screen, it officially became a video-game.

I wouldn't count Pong, or OXO as among the "best" games either, though both still exist today and are constantly re-made on smartphones. Best would be several country miles away from anything resembling either of those :D

For that matter, I don't think any one country can lay claim to making the "best" games either. For one, it's subjective. But more importantly, there have been stunning, influential and genre-defining games made all over the globe.

Plus the uk made the best video game show ever - YouTube for those who don't kno https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/GamesMaster- I'm on a UK mission here:lol:
Even that is subjective I would say Bad Influence! was better.

In saying that GamesMaster was pretty awesome when Dominik Diamond presented it but when Dexter Fletcher took over it was horrendously bad.

I used to live down the road from the Ocean building in Manchester. Those were some seriously good days (although they did some pretty bad movie games).

Eh, the only games to really phone home about on that list are worms and Tomb Raider. All of my favorite games were mostly made in Japan, with a few exceptions being Valve games, since those were all made in the states. I'd say the UK is probably one of the least relevant countries making games today, the only big titles being actively made and developed off the top of my head in the UK are the DIRT games.

Weird they didn't put rare there, but otherwise, I don't know any of those games. Other than tomb raider, which ain't my cup of tea anyways.
