When I first used RetroArch on Wii U, I had a ton of problems with it. The system kept locking up constantly, and the console would instantly shut off while playing a game (~10 Minutes in).

Using RetroArch on Windows & Android is an absolute miracle, and I've become more familiar with its program overtime.

I want to try once more to use RetroArch on Wii U, but I must know a few things first:

  • Does the console still shut down instantly at random times even when playing a game?
  • Are shaders supported?
  • Is CBHC needed or recommended?
  • How well does RetroArch work on Wii U in its current state?

I'm hoping that my Wii U has a few good years left in it, so any feedback would be appreciated.

Honestly I haven’t ever had any issues with it. I had one way way long ago where you couldn’t load two roms without resetting. This was fixed long ago though and there’s been no other issues for me. Set it up latest version and download all needed files. Then should be fine.

I had retroarch build from around 1.7.5 and it worked fine. I then updated to a nightly from a week or 2 ago and now mame 2003 and 2003 plus and fba crash.

Oh, so that's not just me then? Good to know. Do you also crash when you try to select a rom from a playlist?

It always crashes when I try load a 2nd rom for mame and fba, mk2 on mame gives straight dsi error, mk1 amd mk3 load ok though, even checked the correct rom version for mame 2003 but just wont work.

Damn. I can't even get Mame to load. I select a Mame core, it goes back to the HBL (which has always been normal when changing cores for me), and then when I try to load up Retroarch again it just outright won't. It black screens then goes right back to the HBL.

As I wrote in the other thread,

I'd love someone to make a Wii U Retroarch FINAL. Take what works great now and tie it all up into a stable package.

Following the nightly updates without proper testing is only going to lead to more crashes. And the developers don't have the time to crawl through the nooks and crannies of the Wii U version when they have other systems to work on.

Man, I'm not even using a nightly. I'm using the most recent 1.7.7 stable release and from 1.7.5 where I was before updating it broke scanning, loading from a playlist, and all Mame cores. It added ozone, which was why I updated as I vastly prefer it to xmb, but even that doesn't work right as your playlist preview is populated but when you select the playlist it is suddenly empty. History does the same thing in ozone. So it has nothing to do with nightlies, the "stable" releases are just as fucked. This doesn't bother me with dead projects like PPSSPP, but when something is in active development and the developer outright doesn't give a shit that people are posting issues and ignores them then you have a real asshole on your hands. Just abandon the project if you don't care, it's better than breaking your own homebrew and calling it a damn improvement.

Hi guys, I'm late for the show!
One thing that really surprised me when reading up on retroarch and emulation on the Wii U was that wiimotes can't be used as cursor for lightgun games, is that really so? It feels like a crazy missed opportunity?!

I wonder what it takes driver-vise to solve this?
