I haven't been keeping up with the scene news for almost a year now. Reading the new stuff kinda confuses me a bit. But is it still sxos vs open sourced stuff much like it was gateway vs open source for the 3ds?

That was when I got to messing with my 3ds and it was kinda confusing at first. but soon after that, the scene kinda evolved to the point where emunand was obsolete and everything was easier with Cia installs.

Will the switch ever get to a point where home brew and backups can be installed with one file by one app and emunand isn't needed? Or is an nsp file already like a Cia file?

the 3ds wasnt always that simple either.
For the longest while you had to crash the home menu to start the exploit chain which was a bit on the random site wether it worked or not.
So yes it will reach the 3ds level of ease sooner or latter, just give it time.

Switch IS easy....trigger the RCM exploit with a jig, paper clip or piece of wire, copy files to microSD card and inject payload. Granted, you do have to inject a payload every time you reboot your system (or use a dongle) but how often are you restarting your console? Typically the only time I have to restart is when I am copying a file over 4GB (granted, I could just FTP it, but that takes FOREVER). At first, you may be rebooting a fair bit because you want to check out a bunch of games, but once you get to the point of having a set of games you want on the system, you won't reboot near as much. Some people have even integrated an internal chip to not need to connect the Switch to an external device (computer, phone, dongle).

The hardest part of Switch modding is making sure your system isn't patched by using the serial number....

Have you forgotten how even after a few years after the 3ds was released we still need about 6 hours or more just to install a9lh? Not to mention that we need certain games for an entrypoint. But with the switch we just have to copy a few files, trigger rcm, inject the payload and we're done, it's tethered but at least in this early in its lifetime and we already have a bootrom exploit. Yeah, I side with the others, the switch is way easier.

Let's put the switch hacking scene on a graph. It started out slow but every since the "paper clip" method was released it's been on a quick and steady incline. Now let's say it never stops till the death of the switch hacking scene. It would surpass the 3ds pretty fast. But once again this is a perfect situation, there could always be problems. If you are thinking about a coldboot CFW.... I sadly don't think that will ever happen

I totally understand your point of view, but you shouldn't be worried about hacking your Switch at all! It really isn't that hard of a process, the pin stuff may look hard at first, but as soon as you either watch a video or read the guide slowly, taking it step by step, you will find out that it really isn't that hard.

A RCM Jig can be made out of pretty much any object made out of a conductive material, and the pins on the joycon / joycon rail aren't that small, they can be easily seen provided the right lightning conditions and a bit of patience dedicated to understanding the pin layout (1 is the closest pin to the top of the console aka the screen while 10 is closest to the back side).

All you gotta do is short the 1st and 10th pin with some conductive material and make sure you dont touch pin 4 (that's power iirc).

A good place to look for RCM jig's ready to buy would be eBay (they are really cheap, like 4->5$ cheap), or you could try making your own (https://gbatemp.net/threads/the-ultimate-list-of-mods-to-enter-rcm.502145/)

I'm really going off path... oh man, but pretty much just don't be afraid to experiment, if your Switch is turned off there is (don't quote me on this), pretty much nothing that can happen with you tampering with the pins of the joycon rail, apart from physical damage such as breaking a pin, but that is really hard to do as long as you are gentle with it.

There are two warmboot method being worked on one works up to possible 7.x or lower (Denju vu) and older one that is working on 1.0 but may work on 1.x-3.0 later (Nereba)

In short; no Nintendo has learned from the past. They now actually real check stuff and make it a challenge. And with them keeping things fresh when it comes down to new firmware versions ... well as easy no I dont think so.

But as you might have noticed; the homebrew scene is a very lively one. People are always looking into things ... keep that in mind :)

Meanwhile: Nintendo forgot to burn a fuse on update 8.0 ;-;

Ehh as someone who been with 3ds hacking since the beginning i think the switch scene where it's at now isn't far behind. As far as "level of ease" It's about as simple as u can get(granted u have a unpatched system)

Would love to see the switch get to a point where it can go online while modded like the 3ds can but other then that i don't see any huge difference between the switch and the 3ds.

Switch has NAND backups/usb install/custom themes/save editor/online play between other hacked systems(granted this can be streamlined a bit)/and a great homebrew scene(seriously who would of thought we would have a working psp emulator so soon)

What does the 3ds have over the switch scene besides online play?

The 3DS used to take literal hours as you waited for the slow as shit processor to read and write out the entire NAND to a slow as shit SD card for emuNAND. Followed by a billion steps.

The Switch is already easier.
