Nintendo Switch firmware 6.0.0 out now, adds digital game sharing

IMG_1501.JPG

After being leaked by dataminers, and then teased by Nintendo, the Switch's firmware 6.0 update, set to go live today, is now available to officially download. As noted before, this update focuses on preparing Switch consoles for the new online service. For the first three hours after the update becomes available, the eShop will go down for maintenance. Once that wraps up, you'll be free to buy a Nintendo Switch Online membership, start your free trial, and get to testing out the new features. In regards to the NES games, new information has rolled out, mentioning that players will have to download them all in bulk, together, in a ~60MB file. And don't worry, general system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience have been made.

Improvements Included in Version 6.0.0 (Distributed 9/18/2018)

    • The term "active console" has been renamed "primary console" in Nintendo eShops
    • Playing software in multiple consoles has certain restrictions
  • Display of Nintendo Switch News articles will be limited to match the restricted software parental controls setting selections
    • Please note that the restriction will only apply to News articles distributed after the release of version 6.0.0.

    • To change the language, head to the System Settings > System > USB Keyboard
Removed the following system functionality

  • After installing the system update, it will no longer be possible to unlink your Nintendo Account from your Nintendo Switch user
General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience, including:

  • Compatibility improvements have been made for a controller licensed by Nintendo

Most notably, perhaps, is the new ability to digitally share games with other consoles. If you sign into another Switch account, you can set a console as Primary or Non-Primary. A non-primary account can even play games from the primary account, with the caveat that the primary console isn't playing any digital games, and that you're constantly online.

Key Points:
Primary Console:

  • You can have one primary console at a time for your Nintendo Account.
  • The first Nintendo Switch console you use to connect to Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch will become your primary console.
  • While using the primary console, any user account on the console can play the downloadable content you have purchased.
  • While using the primary console, you do not need to have an active Internet connection while playing downloadable software.
    • An Internet connection is still required to use online features or games which require a subscription service.
  • You can change which Nintendo Switch console is your primary console but you must first deactivate the current primary console.

Non-Primary Console:

  • A Nintendo Account can be linked to Nintendo Switch consoles that are not designated as the primary console, however, some functionality differs from when a Nintendo Account is used on a primary console.
  • While using a non-primary console, you can still use the Nintendo Account to access the Nintendo eShop, purchase and download software, and under certain conditions, play your downloadable software.
  • While using a non-primary console, you must have an active Internet connection to play downloadable content.
    • If you lose your Internet connection while playing downloadable content on a non-primary console, your game will pause after a certain amount of time; however, once you connect online again, you will be able to resume from the point you left off.
  • While using a non-primary console, downloadable content can only be started by the user that purchased the content.
  • When using downloadable software on a non-primary console, your game will pause if your Nintendo Account is used to access downloadable software on any other Nintendo Switch console.

I'm impressed Nintendo borrowed the PS4 share system with primary/Non-primary console idea.
Though, I'm kind of unhappy the way they did it.

If you compare the idea with borrowing/lending a game cartridge to a friend, it doesn't prevent you to play ANOTHER game at the same time without annoying your friend.
Why playing ANY downloadable game would pause your lent game on the other console ?
I'd understand if you launch the exact same game currently played : you can't have the cartridge if you lent it, and thus can't launch that game twice at the same time. But, what about OTHER games?

the graphic on nintendo website is confusing, because it specifically shows :
- The same user account name (John), not another user account playing the same game.
- The same game, not John launching ANOTHER downloadable game not currently played on the second console.

what happen if it's a different user on the primary console, playing the lent game ? -> I would agree if it can't be launched, or pause the other console, because you can only have one game copy at a time.
what happen if the same user on both consoles play different games? -> I would not agree if the game is paused, just because primary console launched ANOTHER game. the game is lent, and should be playable, only one copy at a time.

Edit:
I'm also not liking the fact that it's not officially a game sharing (borrow/lend), but just a "multiple console with the same account".
you don't lend the game to another user's account, you actually register your account on another console, providing your login/password/eshop credential and ability to purchase from the non-primary console.

it's an attempt at allowing the game to be on multiple consoles, but only for the same user account. which, obviously can't be done by the same person. Why would the same person launch the same games twice at the same time? being cartridge or downloadable.
it looks like a game lending idea, but it's not fully safe to do it.
It's a "one user at a time" more than "one game at a time". I see it as user sharing more than game sharing. if the same user connects on another console (whatever the game), the current one is paused.

I would have either blocked purchasing games on non primary, or allow game sharing with a code to another user account. do it properly if you allow game sharing! mimic a cartridge behavior.

To be honest this is better than nothing.
I trust my Friend and for purchases in the eShop i have to provide my Password before payment so i am good.

Remember: Before that change you had to fully deactivate your main Switch if you wanted to play your games on a different Switch. This is miles better and reminds me of steam (where you also have to login to your account on the "guest" PC at least once).

I signed up for family plan. This sure would have been nice a 15 months ago when we bought our 2nd Switch and the family was constantly playing BotW as I had to start a new save on the 2nd switch in order to get enough screen time. Didn’t want to do a system transfer becuase that would have moved the couple of digital purchases we had over as well.

Great my switch is now a doorstop because of the online services.
In that case I will happily purchase that door stop from you at double current door stop market prices. :grog:

I am still a little bummed that online isn't free anymore, at the same time 20$ for a year of service is by far the cheapest service. I've already paid for a year of service and upped all of my saves.

So far everything is very smooth, especially the selection menu/overlay UI for the NES games. It gives you three different picture modes to choose from including a very realistic CRT filter, lots of save states.

My question is, can you hide the overlay or at least, the bottom HUD on the screen so it's just, the game itself and nothing distracting or are we stuck with that?

Ok now I just have a question. I own two Nintendo Switch. One with all my legit games (cartridges and digital) and the other one for hacking. If I don't want to burn fuses on TX CWF just need to update with the jig and the + button on the Nintendo switch, then activate AutoRCM? Or I need to use the "Sasuke eye" (ChoiDujour) to update to 6.0. I really don't want to do complicate stuffs

Thanks!

  • As I said in the other thread, if this is the same version of 6.0.0 as the one that leaked, there's no reason not to update at this point. tumGER's v9 files are fully compatible with the leaked version of 6.0.0.
  • If you don't want to burn efuses, you need to update using ChoiDujourNX.
  • If you update your system normally without ChoiDujourNX, AutoRCM will be removed if you already have AutoRCM installed. This is true of all system updates.
  • You can reinstall AutoRCM after the update, or you can just use ChoiDujourNX to update instead.
EFuses? So is the switch like a bomb or something?

If it's the same file and hasn't been touched since then yes. I know.. Really unlikely but who knows?
It doesn't work like that. If hash mismatches,it might simply mean that they recompiled their stuff (build id always change)
On reswitched discord, multiple people said it's not that different, bit still have some changes (like 4 title

This new game sharing thinggy seems interesting tho...

Seems like it stays on screen, but the games are aligned so nothing is cut off at the bottom. Being NES you also have to deal with some pretty giant side bars for 4:3, so I don't find the bar at the bottom distracting or noticeable when I'm playing.

Hopefully they'll be a way to hide it, just saying.
