Gaming Suitable games for a 10 year old girl and 5 year old boy

jesus, yes they do like those games. because they keep extending their loans on them and they move like hotcakes. there's a reason there's so many of these games out there, because, believe it or not, a large enough crowd of young girls actually enjoys these games to make them profitable.
because, to some degree, their standards are different from yours. apparently, where some need an engaging story and cinema-level cutscenes, others just want to tap on a cute-looking horses or make sick animals healthy, of ride through a huge empty field.

and since ds games work on 3ds and are dirt cheap, you might as well throw them in the mix, no good reason to keep them out.

btw, i saw someone suggesting mario party and i would almost agree, however, in the hands of young children, mario party becomes a touchscreen killer.

it is true, even I admit to having shitty (in my current opinion) taste in games in about those age ranges, you enjoy what you have, what you know, and develop a taste for more complicated games over time, a childs mind is much simpler in what they think about and want, that's why you see them ask for dolls and action figures instead of 3...4...500 dollar consoles

Well, I do have an academic degree in psychology, so maybe my "standard" can be useful to others. Many things are acquired taste; in the late 19th century, boys wore pink and girls wore blue. However, we know next to nothing about this girl, so your personal experience in a public library like doesn't say much in that regard, which is why I suggested games with a more universal appeal. A game like Fire Emblem has even like... 50% girls. I simply think it is better to choose something that stimulates intelligence and fantasy to a greater extent over something casual / generic, because intelligence and fantasy are two of the most important assets of the human mind.

Ah ok, I don't think it was ever released for VCs. The game is quite enjoyable actually, though a bit on the easy side. A 2nd hand cart shouldn't cost too much!

No Terraria, it has enemies being killed (bunnies and others + blood). I'd vote for Kirby as well.

EDIT: And i would give no game console for the 5 year old one. Too young to start IMHO.

I started my nephew on 3DS and Wii U at 3 years old. 5 is kinda a late start. I did it so they could learn real video game skills and experience real games. If you don't give them consoles, they will think crappy mobile games are the only kinds of games that exist. Real games are so much better for them than mobile crap. A 5-year-old is too young to take care of such an expensive toy, so it should be used only with supervision. You should also try to do a good job limiting it, as they have lots of other games, physical toys, learning activities, etc, that they should be participating in. But seriously, using a console to reduce mobile game time is a great idea.

Of course you should. The majority of the games are designed for their level. My generation has grown up with video games since they were 4 or 5 in families that could afford it. If you don't give them consoles, they will play stupid games that don't teach any real skills on phones and ipads.

for the 5 year old: puzzle games like tetris, racing games, simple jump and run games like kirby
possibly nintendogs for both?

for the 10 year old, kirby too, animal crossing, probably bratz/barbie/horse games.
maybe rhythm thief and harvest moon, possibly ever oasis.

10 year olds can read well dude. They can have games with tons of text. 10 year olds are already at the point where they can read the entire Harry Potter Series.

Hmmm, I advice some people to quit deciding based on gender what game a child/someone might like doesn't have to depend on gender. It's more personality thing. BTW there's nothing wrong with a 10 year old liking barbie/horse games as there's nothing wrong with an adult liking them either. I think it's more important that you have fun.

If your niece like fashion or life sim rpg games I'd suggest the AC, SoS, HM, Rune Factory/Hometown Story/ Style Boutique/Style Savvy games & maybe Tomodachi Life.

Layton games & other level 5 games like Fantasy Life & Inazuma eleven are also nice for kids.

Mario, Zelda/Kirby/Hello Kitty/Skylanders/Disney/Lego/Pokémon/Yokai Watch games nice for all ages.

Ever oasis & the upcoming MH stories might also be fun...

Lol, there're just too many games, don't get me started on ds games. My younger siblings played pretty much anything they got their hands on if it seemed fun/liked the graphics when they were around those ages even if they couldn't read or understand the language. I have to say Pokémon & Mario, Nintendo, life sim, rpg games were & are still the most popular now that they're older. Puzzle & Mystery. Some like Rhythm games too.

And I agree text shouldn't matter if they like reading & have patience. I & my sibling were all avid readers at those age. xD

Please, when I was 10 I was reading long books no problem. Come on we even read Goosebumps, no nightmares beyond the normal amount. Sexual innuendo goes right over their heads. You know that Disney/Pixar movies have that too?

That you did doesn't make it a good suggestion anyway, and I don't mean that reading isn't a good suggestion.
But you should consider an uncle is asking suggestions of something to give as a gift to 10 years old niece.
If he gives her something that (most kids these days) would not want to engage with, well she will not be very happy.
In the other hand if he gives her something full of weird killing, yanderes and on top sexual innuendo, hmmm... her parents may night be quite happy about it.

So better save the poor uncle that problem and give a suitable suggestion.

Yes true, an uncle should not be giving a little girl that particular game, especially if she doesn't want it. That game was not a serious suggestion, it was a joke. I was just saying that if the particular person, probably like a 12 year old boy, was interested in that game, then it wouldn't be the end of the world if the parents let him have it. I was objecting to the idea that it is always wrong 100% for every possible child. There's lots of 10 year olds playing Call of Duty. They don't turn out as serial killers. That isn't an uncle type of game, that should be up to the parents.

Well thanks for all the suggestions, I should say my niece loves reading and has read all the Harry Potter books as one person mentioned. My sister doesn't allow her free reign on the 3ds, so it's pretty safe to say she'll be supervised.
Don't think my sister or her husband will be very happy about zero trilogy or senran series.

that doesn't stop pheonix wright from being not that kid friendly and i am aware they can read, which is why i listed games that require reading for the 10 year old. that doesn't mean that they won't get annoyed with a game thats basically text only and has you reread the same text over and over.

i'm also having a good laugh about touchscreen games not teaching real skills while console games do.

btw, i meant to mention the art academy series for quite a while now. should be fine for both

If you were willing to get nds games, these few were pretty cheep and also quite good.

All are relatively cheap and have high critical acclaim. Mystery dungeon got a 50/100 from most reviewers but a 90/100 from people who bought the game. Just look at the YouTube comment section of the ign review

It was a joke as a suggestion. Would probably be something that I would be playing at that age but not a suitable gift from an uncle.

just put a time limit on the whole shebang and take note if they're getting very angry or tense while playing. i got my gameboy at 6 and got 30 minutes a day (which could be saved one day for a 1 hour limit)

Are the Harry Potter games any good? My niece has read all the books, her dad was looking at the ds games but they seem to be quite expensive for some reason Amazon uk has them for almost £30 each(the non Lego ones).
