No, there isn't. That happens in the disc drive firmware itself, so even having BootMii installed as Boot2 won't let you disable the startup initialization.

You could disassemble the drive and disconnect the motors, but then you wouldn't be able to use discs. (You still need the disc drive connected in order for the system to function properly.)

I've seen mods where people have gutted the DVD drive out entirely, and stashed their USB harddrive in it's place. So I don't think that's 100% accurate. I guess they could have just gutted the laser assembly and left in the PCB...

Yeah, I keep my DVD drive for ripping games I buy from Goodwill. It's almost as fast as torrenting them, but I'll know MY dump is a clean dump.

Yeah, I think it's the laser aligning itself where it needs to be when it powers on, which is annoying and strange when there's no disc in.

I thought it was the sound of it detecting whether a disc is in the drive. If you have a wii disc in there it will find it immediately, otherwise it has to move the head around to see if there is a game cube disc in there.

The sound is the drive calibrating the eject motor and sled the laser is mounted on. I guess it doesn't run the eject motor if there's a disc inserted already. :)

@The Real Jdbye, I thought about that and I have blank DVD's and Blurays but honestly after like 90 songs I just listen to it a couple of hundred times toss it out and burn something else or have like 2-3 CD's. Florida here the heat in the car tends to ruin the CD's after like a few months even commercial pressed ones don't last too long.
