Lots of times I view content on google play store.... and steam.... and some other places, that give reviews on content that is made. When I see reviews they mostly not a review at all. Is just a simple comment on how the game didn't work, and a one star score rating. "This game didn't work on my phone. I loaded it and it just was a black screen. 1 star"

I mean is fine you wanted to comment on the game not working, you leave a review cause it lets others know of the experience, but is it necessary to give a one star? I can see the one star represent your comments on the game being something you disliked but cause it didn't work on your device is another thing. Wouldn't have been better to contact the person with the supplied email information and explain the problem instead? The review section is not for getting support on problems with your downloads, that what support is for.

xkcd because they do so often have relevant information

Anyway you appear to have made the mistake of assuming star ratings mean something. They don't, at least not beyond about 48 hours after a new store is created.

That said letting the public know the application in question lacks polish and such is a valuable service.

Hmm...while the cartoon is both hilarious and to the point it tries to make, it is not the point that Sonic Angel Knight is making (@SAK: correct me when I'm wrong, okay? :) ).

The point is that there's this trending regard that reviews and comments are the same thing. And of course it's useful to let the developer know that their app or game isn't working. However, that was never the point of a review in the first place. Reviews should be about how well the program set out to do what it promises to be doing. Yes, being technologically able to do that is a pretty darn part of it...but to be honest, that should have been a given (to take the cartoon as an example: you shouldn't be able to actually review the game unless you actually had the chance to actually USE the program to detect an actual tornado...actually* ). If you ask me, programs on a store should at least give two ratings (one for aesthetics, and one for technological decency). It takes more time to rate a game, but that's not necessarily a bad thing: it's not like five stars are really worth it if the damn thing is just a bunch of fancy bells and whistles. :P

Perhaps it's better to look at it from another perspective...reviews in their current store-form say something of the product how it is AT THAT POINT, no matter how much that may change. Many games are boo-ed because they contain bugs at launch, but may turn out to be great game once the developer irons them out. However, at that time, it's pretty hard to get "a second first impression".

Two examples: anno 2070 and origin. The former is probably the game I most doubted to buy on steam. It was severely discounted and looked gorgeous, but the steam reviews were DEVASTATING. Everyone and their dog seemed to hate the game. Sure, this anger was mostly aimed at uplay (which obviously isn't a core part of the experience), and there's something to be said when someone says they hate it while their very steam account says they've played it for over 100 hours...but I never felt like buying a game was such a gamble (unrightfully so, btw: that game is awesome).

Things are more tricky with origin. While I have most C&C games, they're a pain to set up on windows. And the whole 17 game collection on origin for 20 bucks? That's in all ways worth it...except it needs origin. And I have no freaking idea how the hell I'm going to know objectively whether that's a good thing or not because people just vent their rage or past trauma's on the thing. I have no doubt that it used to be terrible, but how it is NOW I can only guess**.

For google apps, I don't even bother reading "reviews": most near-five-star rated apps always have a beggaton button in them ("hey, you tried this game...how about you giving us five stars, yeah? :D "), and it's not like you can really say anything useful over "yes it works".

*yeah, I noticed the overuse of the word actually after I wrote it...but why edit it? :P
**for those unaware: upon launch, steam was crucified by gamers as well for being "a steaming pile of sh**". Opinions may have changed a bit since then. ;)

I ignore most one-star reviews because they're written by people too emotional to think open-mindedly about the product they're reviewing.

I think it's wrong to give 1 star for the game you haven't even started to play because it's not working. Contacting the developer or trying to ask for help on forums is the solution.

I think it is fair to give a 1 star review if it can't run, presuming user error wasn't involved in some way e.g. not following the instructions, using it on a device which is not supported, etc.

If a product doesn't work when it's suppose to, that's a big failure in my book.

The star system in general also has issues anyway, for example, I've seen reviews praising a product and yet giving it a low review.

That said, I think maybe they could try and find ways to improve things, for example, if the dev is suppose to have fixed something then give the users a trial period to test the app again and remove/update their 1 star review.

Welcome to 99.9% of all 1 star reviews and steam thumbs down.
User error. Or users too stupid to do a simple google search for a solution.

1 star reviews are garbage reviews. I generally just laugh at them.

It's not that bad on steam (I'd say at the very most one third of the thumbs down reviews are due to technical issues), but it's still bad enough.

Thus far, I've only encountered one steam game that just had no solution for technical issues even years after release (double dragon neon). But I've seen the overall trend on a game be far more negative than deserved because it had some issue around release date.

Depends, given the quality of some releases (especially ****y asset flips), there can be legitimate reasons.

I've had games which also suffer from hardware/driver related issues, for example, Bioshock doesn't like my Asus D2X so I either have to switch to onboard or use my GPU.

There are also games like Batman Arkham City which can be hit or miss and it's not the users fault.

I actually like the one star reviews for things, though I do first filter them for vaguely good grammar and lose the all capitals reviews.

This would take us back to the classic "review score" argument. That's why I really like Steam's review system. Valve knows that the reviews some people place will be harsh criticism of the game's current state, which might include performance issues or otherwise. Instead of review scores, they do Recommended/Not Recommended, because these two options encapsulate everything: Do you not recommend it because it keeps crashing? Do you recommend it because the gameplay is great? It's an awesome system because it takes out review scoring altogether to allow for a really wide breadth of reviews and complaints. Then their option to include an "all-time" review aggregate and a "current" review aggregate lets games improve over time without being bogged down by all their old reviews. Finally, it's also great that their review "scores" are just words, such as "Overwhelmingly Positive," "Very Positive," etc.

I feel that performance issues and other non-content-related gripes should be voiced in reviews. It's a good thing for people to know when a game is dysfunctional. Sometimes people want to leave a review to warn potential buyers about certain problems with a game, but they don't want to write a comprehensive write-up on everything else the games does right/wrong. Just create a better system than review scores and the problem will be much better solved.

But that's a valid complaint of the product, no? It should exist among the "reviews," but the review systems should be overhauled and ditch the scoring system with something that can allow both "gripe" reviews and actual reviews to coexist together. There's no way we're going to get people to use the review systems for only "actual" reviews, so let's instead revamp the review system to accommodate.

Is not a review, is a complaint, yes is informing people that the product may not work with your device, but that is something you also should consider sending to support, and to leave a bad score then say "I be glad to give it 5 star when is working." Why bother giving it a 1 just to change it to 5 when it works? Why not just give it a 5 star in the first place? Is not a review, is a bare bones complaint that should be sent to the support team.

The belief is that by taking action against them (giving them a low score), they will be more likely to respond and to fix the issue in a future patch. In a way, it could be justified because if you can't open and use the software in question, a five star review is meaningless, no? Some people might also want to just let others know of the pending issue. I see what you mean, though, that this is a dumb use of the "review score" systems x3 Just glace at ///metacritic///
