Hi so I went to move some files onto my external that I use for my backups for my wii U. But the drive wouldn't appear on my PC so I went and ran diskmanager through the run command and I can see my drive but it just won't pop up. It says it's "unallocated" so I right click and hit "new simple volume" and tried to allocate a partition.

I put my HDD back into my wii U, and says it needs to be formated now. uh...well I guess i'll lose a bunch of stuff but that's fine I got it backed up anyway...

So I do that but now it goes back to being unallocated! (meaning I can't use my external as a storage device on my PC for other things..)

Is there a way around this? a mod maybe? I read that Nintendo has their own encryption when it formats drives or something(wbfs) is there a way I can make it so I can use my external on both my wii U and pc? seems like if I format it on wii u i can't use it on my PC and vice versa.

Any help is appreciated thanks.

Hi ... yes you figured by yourself. You can't use the same USB Drive for both PC and Wii U.
So, when you have partitioned it you lose everything. Maybe in the future someone could figure out how to "read" a WII U prepared USB HDD. But for now...keep it on your Console is the best thing.
Hope this help.

Wii U doesn't support partitioning. It's all or nothing.

WBFS has nothing to do with it; that's a homebrew "file system" designed for Wii backups, and it should no longer be used as a file system due to its general instability. (As a disc image format, it's "okay", but I prefer the Hermes CISO format.)

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=967085 would this work? someone said I could use Gparted to make partitions on my drive without formatting. Would this be able to split the drive so I can use it on my pc and wii U?
No, it won't. Wii U doesn't care about how many partitions you have set up; it will force a format of the entire drive, which includes wiping the MBR and partition table.

So at this point is my only option another storage device then?
