Sony to shut down Guerrilla Games Cambridge

gc.jpg

It looks like one of Sony's branch developers, Guerrilla Games Cambridge, will be shut down for good soon. Sony will be laying off every member of the studio, an action they call "regrettable", while also claiming that "it is necessary to make some changes to the European studios structure". Guerrilla Cambridge had been around for 19 years prior to this, and was the studio behind titles such as MediEvil on the Playstation, Killzone Mercenary on the Playstation Vita, and RIGS: Mechanized Combat League on Playstation VR.

It should be noted that Guerrilla Games Cambridge branch has nothing to do with the mainline Guerrilla Games (known for the mainline Killzone series and upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn) subsidiary, and thus will not be impacted by the former's closure.

Whilst we accept that this decision will mean that we risk losing high calibre staff, by focusing on other Studios with exciting new projects in development, (including continued work on PlayStation VR), we believe we will be in a stronger position going forward and able to offer the best possible content of the highest quality to our players.

This decision should not take anything away from the incredible games and services that Guerrilla Cambridge has delivered.

They made that cool ass Frogger game back in the 90s, too, when Sony acquired them. Best game ;O;

Oh well, they haven't really put out much anyways recently, just 2 games in the past 7 years. Sony claimed they're going to try and "reallocate" the devs into other projects, so nothing much will be "lost" in the long term when it comes to the devs.

I wonder if santa monica and japan studio are all thats going to be left, as sony puts more effort into using the PS4 as a platform to sell on demand movies, Qbert rebooted and fluster cluck.

Maybe they come together in a new studio and make a MediEvil successor (like Yooka-Laylee for Banjo Tooie) *dream* (I know it won't will happen, but I can keep dreaming about it ;))

The thing is that if they do move them to other studios, hopefully combining the best staff into guerrilla proper and into the Santa Monica studio we should see better games and less filler that comes from extraneous and idle studios.

Do we really want to see them approach the fate of rareware? I mean perfect dark was awesome, as was perfect dark zero--but that Star Wars Kinect game was beneath them in every way. If they could have been dissolved and absorbed into 343, halo guardians might have been better off..
