Hi everyone,

First of all, my goals: to play Wii U backups, and to play Wii + N64 + SNES backups as well.

I followed FlimFlam69's guide: https://github.com/FlimFlam69/WiiUTutorial/wiki
I installed Haxchi (steps 0 - 3), and I also followed step 6 to install a few Wii U backups via the Brazilian method. Then I proceeded through step 7 to hack vWii.

I now have a few questions. Everywhere I look, it sounds like there are about 10 different ways to install VC titles and Wii backups.

I have an SDXC card (64GB, already FAT32 formatted). I have a handful of external drives of varying capacities. I have 11GB of internal storage left on my Wii U (32GB version).

I know it's not possible to have Wii U backups on the same external storage device as Wii backups. I think I have enough internal storage left for Wii U backups since I only have one backup left to install, leaving my SDXC and external drives for Wii games.

My questions are:
* What file type(s) am I going to be looking for for Wii backups? wad? iso? I also see some which are just a pile of .app and .h3 files.
* How do I install N64 games (particularly, DK64 and Mario 64, possibly Zelda OoT and MM) and SNES (Mario RPG)? I see some people doing this on their Wii U, some people doing this on vWii.
* It should be possible to have Wii backups (+N64 and SNES) loaded off of on an SDXC card, right? (Or, failing that, I assume an external hard drive works.)

Sorry if these are dumb questions, but I did search around; it's just rather overwhelming how much information there is, and how quickly everything changes. Thanks very much to anyone who takes the time to read this!

1. You need .wbfs Wii games. They're smaller than their iso counterpart. And for Gamecube you need .iso or .gcm, mostly .iso
2. You install N64 games the same as anything else on the Wii U. With WUP Installer GX2.
3. Yup you can have Wii/gamecube backups on the SD card and load them in vWii. You can install N64, Snes, etc in vWii's internal storage. But generally I prefer Wii U mode for those kind of games. Also RetroArch is the best for Snes, GB, GBA, Sega Genesis, etc. So I only install N64 VC games in Wii U mode.
I recommend USB Loader GX + Nintendont for Gamecube games. And CFG USB Loader GX for Wii games. But if you were using a hard drive, USB Loader for both gamecube and wii. You need to install cIOS D2X before you can play Wii backups though.

Absolutely use the definitive vWii hacking guide: https://gbatemp.net/threads/the-definitive-vwii-hacking-guide.425852/

I do not recommend using VC games in Wii U mode. they are dark and colours are washed out. Nintendo fucked up the Wii U emulator for VC. I hope they get it right on the Switch.

For VC you better use Wii/vWii. You can have gamecube and nintendont on one HDD (primary partition). wbfs has its own partition, I guess.
but unfortunately you cannot have Wii U games on the same HDD so you would have to switch between both HDDs depending on what you want to play (wii/gamecube or Wii U) because the Wii U will not allow multiple HDDs at the same time.

So for Wii/gamecube I use my original Wii. and for Wii U I use the Wii U.

I did as MattKimura suggested, using Wup Installer GX2 to load N64 backups, exactly the same as loading Wii U backups. Haven't tried any SNES backups yet; at the moment I'm enjoying some oldies from N64.

And USB Loader in vWii mode was also simple to use -- I was honestly just confused about what file type I should be looking for for Wii backups (wbfs as he suggested was perfect). This video basically walked me through everything from there:
