I just got the wii u today, and I'm trying to set up CFW for it. I've been following this guide:
https://github.com/FlimFlam69/WiiUTutorial/wiki

I currently am able to boot into Homebrew and I'm stuck at Part 3, which is the Haxchi installation part. It says that it is required for you to purchase a DS VC title in order to install it. Is there a free alternative?

I skipped all the Haxchi parts, because the guide says that you can use mocha cfw instead. But it seems that you need a 64GB SD card (which i don't have) to install rednand. Now I'm kind of lost. Is there a way to use mocha on sysnand instead, and is there another solution that doesn't require purchasing, or having a large SD card?

I also read in the guide that running rednand can brick your system. Is that true?

I have a 32GB Wii U and am currently on the latest firmware 5.5.1.

there's no other way to install haxchi atm, so ur going to have to purchase a ds title. I think brain age is the cheapest at $6.99. u don't need to install haxchi to use mocha, but it makes it easier/quicker if u do. yes, redNAND requires an sd card that's double the size of the NAND u have for ur system. I've never heard of redNAND bricking the system. it's essentially a way to prevent the potential for a brick since the NAND is being read off of an sd card. formatting redNAND will brick redNAND though. maybe that's what u read?

"Odds are low, but you can potentially brick your Wii U by attempting to use redNAND. Proceed with caution. I am not responsible for any bricks that you may cause."

Also, should I use mocha CFW or this IOSUhax on this video? I was playing safe and didn't want to try to boot mocha because i didn't have a proper sd card for rednand. I only have 4 gb.

oh, I see what ur saying. I haven't heard of anyone bricking their wii u by installing redNAND, but I guess it could potentially happen. the NAND ur using is cloned to the sd card, so all game licenses r cloned as well. the downside to redNAND is that the virtual wii doesn't work. u'll get a "files r corrupted" error if u try to boot it. mocha does work with sysNAND also. when u boot up mocha, u'll be presented with a config screen. if u opt not to see the config screen again, u can also bring it back up by holding B at bootup of mocha. iosuhax is slower (bootup time) and doesn't offer a configuration screen. not sure if there r any other differences, but that's two of them.

Ah, so mocha is the current best cfw at the moment?

yes. frappuccino is supposed to be released soon which is based off of mocha but has more advanced settings. it won't matter if u install games on mocha though. they'll still work on frappuccino if u decide to set it up. personally, I have mocha setup with haxchi by holding down a certain button. my default bootup is redNAND though. I've already installed a lot of games to redNAND, and I don't really want to start over with sysNAND since the licenses r installed to whichever NAND ur using at the time.

I have one more question. Are you allowed to have backup loaders of both Wii and Wigames in the same drive? And if you have experience on hacking the vWii, are the backups stored the same style as the original wii's USB Loader GX? I have a spare hard drive from my original Wii with Wii backups on them, and I'm wondering if just plugging my previous Wii's hard drive in my Wii U after modding the vWii would just work right off the bat.

no, u can't have wii and wii u games on the same drive. the wii u hdd is encrypted anyway, and partitioning part of the drive to fat 32 is not possible. the wii u will format the entire drive. I've hacked my virtual wii, yes. the games r in the same format as they were on the normal wii. personally, I have a toggle switch to my virtual wii drive, so I just have to flip the switch to turn the drive on and off. if the drive is on or connected (with no toggle switch) and ur on the wii u os, the system will try to format the drive or it will ask u anyway. the system will then restart if u say no, and u won't be able to do anything until u turn the drive off or unplug it. I bought a second toggle switch for my wii u drive since nintendont doesn't work with two drives plugged in. u'll receive a "region" error iirc.

you can't have a hard drive for both vwii and Wii u at the same time currently.

if you want to load games from your hard drive on Wii u, you will need to format the HDD to the Wii U, once you do that, you will not be able to use the HDD anywhere else unless you format it, it will be compatible only with your own Wii U.

regarding your hard drive from original wii, you can use it as is in vwii, no problem.

I actually have a usb selector for my wii/vwii hdd, so I just need to push a button to send the data to either system (they're close to one another with a ps2 sandwiched in between them). lol

aha thanks guys. Just wondering, if theres a way to move all my saves from my wii to vwii?
As I'm typing this I'm about to start to hack my vwii. I just downloaded the homebrew launcher on my Wii U system memory. Would I be able to just skip all the way to vwii modding in the guide?

yes, there is. u can use the normal method via the built in save app feature. it works without issue. there were a few games I couldn't get to move the save. one of them was new super mario bros, so I used another save application (a homebrew one). I think it was called savegame manager gx. it will allow mass transfer of saves. it's very easy to use. my new super mario bros save was migrated intact. I was getting a "the save may not have been copied" error through the built-in save app. savegame manager gx should work with any save including those that can't be copied.

Hi I finished modding my vwii. I'm looking to install forwarders but I'm hestitant to use Multi Mod Manager. Is it safe for the vwii? I googled one up, but it says it is for the wii, so I'm not sure if I should be using that one.

EDIT: I decided to try it, and it resulted in saying "wad did not complete". My vwii seems to be booting up fine. I now have the channels installed through YAWMM. What I would like to know is if what I have done is harmless, or have I messed something up in vwii that I didn't know about?

@Ichigo1000
Wii forwarders are not compatible with Vwii out of the box, they need to be modified.
In other words, make sure you download a forwarder for the Vwii not for the wii.
