As many of you might know, I published some Wii U hacking related tools on my Github using the Java programming language. Now the funny thing is that I got an email with a job offer because of those contributions. They only had my Github repositories since I did not add any other specific information. Either they are a bit desperate or are already convinced of my skills. Weird. What do you guys think? :P

Code:
Hi BullyWiiPlaza,

[...] we are working on improving developer recruitment. We have analyzed your open source contributions on GitHub and we think that you could be a good fit as Senior Backend Engineer [...]

Actually it's an offer made by Nintendo's yakuzas, if you go they'll kidnap you and update all your systems with some advanced stability

It's an automated text. Guess they haven't reviewed any line of your code. Maybe just counted the lines and if its above 1000, you get a mail.

yeah this. or more likely you regularly submit code and you have followers or viewer or however github works. it's being noticed by said bots.

As a general rule: Always be careful with text just citing information you could easily lookup yourself.

The text includes your username. But to send someone a message on GitHub, you neeed the username anyway, so you can just re-use it inside the text.
Then, there's just a generic message. Nothing specific about your code - because a bot would have a hard time finding out what your code is about. If at all it might rephrase some sentences in your readme, but that would surely contain bad or weird grammar, and you'd notice it.

There have certainly been plenty of people given job offers thanks to open source work, hacking and similar things. That however feels like an automated recruitment (if that is not a form based thing then they need someone that speaks something close to native English next time, though the sticking senior in there sounds like a trick someone would try that knows the language). I had not seen that before but I am behind on my sleazy tactics right now, though it is the logical extension of keyword searching and I am sure we have all seen jobs that measure performance in lines of code written in a given period, despite that being a pretty awful metric. Similarly I have a report on my desk now a client gave me that someone wrote on their website; if you didn't know it would look like a really fancy report but to me it looks like someone did a battery of automated SEO tests (including whether a UK company was on foursquare so you know how useless that is) and printed it out with some rendered shots of the site and on a nice template and printed it all and put it in a fancy ring binder.

Now I am going to have to think about how I would make an automated code analyser recruitment tool. Obviously I would never employ a coder without an interview but I reckon I could get a fair sense of them from open source work (number of lines might factor, could I compile it, do they have an automated test I can run against it, number of times certain segments changed, what libraries they call ranked by how fancy they are, if they were down with the kernel then where it slotted in).

By and large I am not a fan of recruiters (that is what we call and understatement) but you might at least get a laugh out of following that up.

Might be you are one of the few people they could track down. What if they just need some help to patch their exploit and then once they do that they term you? If you take it seriously I would get something in your contract that if they fire you, they owe you a lump sum of in the ballpark of 100K-1M. If they turn you down, they are not serious.

@BullyWiiPlaza. You should not underestimate your talents, you do some fantastic work within the genre!. I'm sure they have looked at your recent & old work that is and found it very good, very talented indeed so yes I would not of thought its a trap at all, follow it up and see. Remember Github is full of hacking tools so I don't think they would make a special declaration to you just to trap you!
