Should we rely on DS flashcards to play our beloved DS classics, or should we move on to emulation?

  • DS flashcards are cheap and very accurate, so let's not waste our time with emulation.

  • 3DeSmume will likely add extra features that hardware based playback cannot dream of. And it's FREE.

  • Why not both? 3DeSmume compliments, rather than competes against flashcards.

  • We should do neither. They're both piracy and DS games suck anyway.

Uh, how about a vote for neither. Native support exists. I just don't think anyone with the skills has looked into it at all. DS emulation on 3DS is a waste of good time that could be used better elsewhere, like I don't know, studying TWL Firm. :|

Don't wanna fuck off dreamers, but the 3DeSmume devs said that the will use dynarec intead of taking advange of DS builtin hardware on the 3DS, that emulator will not going to far. Is like making a GC emulator for Wii, or a PSP emulator for PSV, or Wii emulator for Wii U. Pardon me but that is just retarted.

I agree with the first viewpoint, in that ds carts are currently the best way to do it, however I also wouldn't consider emulation to be a "waste of time" either. Really anything that can be done to progress the scene and ideally move people away from flash carts, the better. If emulation ever hits the point where it's legitimately a good alternative for running flash carts, that would ideally be best for everyone, that way no one is forced to use carts that exist more or less for the sole purpose of profiting from piracy (IMO, this is more immoral than the actual act of piracy, your viewpoint may differ).

The main problem with flashcards IMO is that is basically like saying "I don't want to support devs, but I do want to support illegal piracy cartridge creators." I mean, piracy is bad enough. But paying to pirate is a whole different level of bad IMO.

Since they are not looking into using native DS hardware, this won't lead to what many people are anticipating, and it definitely won't beat native DS solutions(flashcarts). All efforts could've gone into TWL_FIRM which is definitely more promising than this, but it's their time and it's entirely up to the dev.

Why not on a 3ds?
IIRC, the DSi XL displayed DS games much better than a 3DS/N3DS/XL.

The paying to pirate thing can't really be helped if there isn't any alternative like during the DS.

As for my stand on this, 3DeSmuME will complement flashcarts as I see it now. People that have flashcarts will most likely use flashcarts however, they might choose to use 3DeSmuME depending on its progress or capabilities in the near future.

The heck? Everyone says "DS emulation is impossible!!" but now that someone is doing it, those same people are trying to jump on the train? Good old GBATemp.

Not everyone has a job or money, so take that into consideration
>can afford 3DS
>can't afford $10-$30 flash card

Flashcards [...] aren't as feature rich as emulators can be.
The overwhelming majority of DS flash cards have cheat capabilities and many also have real-time saving. Even so, they're meant reflect the use of actual DS cartridges, so they go for accuracy over being 'feature rich' anyway.

All in all, I think that the DS emulator is an interesting POC, but will most likely never reach the level that flash cards are at or that TWL-modifications could be at. That being said, more research is always a good thing.

Although I understand your angle, some people simply want what works best for the moment. At the moment flash carts are a lot more viable for simply playing through whatever game it is, some time down the road hopefully they're on a more level playing field, and people can recommend emulation over flash carts. I'd really much prefer it to be that way myself...

Remember when SNES couldn't be run on o3DS?
Well, blargSNES broke that boundry and now SNES emulation is available for all. In theory I think this will happen to DS emulation aswell, as emulation improves, speed improves, along with accuracy, sound, and gameplay.

i thok dev shoukd add plugin on lima3ds so we cloud paly directl on lima3ds ds roms natihvely
I really hope you get banned tbh.

I think that 3DeSemume in it's current state is worse than a flashcart. If it was done slightly different, it'd be better. Not bashing shutterbug ofc, but if you were able to power on the ARM7/ write an ARM9 payload to run with to handle graphics (Like the original DS and TWL mode do) it would be hands down the best. :P

Flashcards or TWL_FIRM modifications or something like Nintendon't that works natively is the way to go, but the latter will take a while.
However, if this gets better later on, it might be useful thanks to save states, maybe graphics enhancements or something like that. Basically it compliments flashcards and possible any native execution that might get released later IMO.
