Hardware Power outage- Is my data still recoverable?

I have an external hdd that I was going to convert to fat32 since I wanted to watch my movies on my ps3 but there was a power outage during the conversion and now when I plug my external hdd in is says I need to format it, I try to access it and I get a "drive G: is inaccessible" message meaning my data got messed up. I am using AOMEI partition manager the paid for version and it can recover data from my 1tb but I want to know if my movies and other stuff will be recovered since I can fix and attempt to recover damaged data.

Also it says everything is an orphan file, when trying to recover however, it takes forever at 70%. Will it be recovered fully if I am to wait.

What data recovery software does is scan the drive sector by sector to try and find all the parts of the orphaned files (files not listed in the file tables) and piece them back together. If it's getting stuck at a particular part, either it's having trouble reading that sector (bad sector probably) or the files it's working on are extremely fragmented so it takes longer to find all the parts. Chances are, it won't be able to recover everything since whatever sector was being written to at the time will be corrupted and lost, and if any data was located in a bad sector, it won't be able to pull those out. However since you've gotten as far as 70%, you should be able to recover most of it.

Just be patient. Sometimes it takes a few hours, sometimes it takes the better part of a day.

Sorry to bump this old thread but I have recovered most of it with a data recovery software (not aomei) now however I cannot access the drive at all after I fixed it with check disk before that it was in RAW but the data still shows up in the drive, how do I gain access to it again?

Assign it a drive letter in Disk Management

Windows + R > diskmgmt.msc

Assign it a drive letter in Disk Management

Already did that it was D then changed to E. Still can't access it

Nuts, then I don't know what to tell you. Usually if a drive was previously formatted but installed to a computer post-format, it won't automatically assign it a drive letter. That's what I thought was going on

You can't just convert a drive that has data on there to something else WITHOUT formatting it. You were bound to lose that data anyways. What you should've done was transfer the data off of the drive, format the drive to fat32, transfer data back.

AOMEI has a safeguard that converts (ntfs to fat32) it without loosing data.

On the fly is a sure way of not getting your data, I'll never use something like that.
