Hacking I'm (finally) considering switching to A9LH, but I have my doubts.

Okay, I guess I should probably apologize to make a thread like this because I know there's already threads like this one. Thing is that I'm pretty darn paranoid about this whole thing (heck, downgrading alone scares me), but I guess the ability to have a system that can recover from bricking without a hardmod (as well as the other features it has) tempts me. I just have my doubts, hoping somebody can clear it up for me. I've read through most of Plailect's guide, & they're a few things that I'm just doubtful in.

• I have a US N3DSXL with sysNAND 9.2 & emuNAND 10.7, so I just start everything from Step 4 (unless I'm a total idiot when I read through the guide). But it mentions that I should have redNAND various times. Do I need it instead of emuNAND to do the process? If so, is it as simple as using Decrpyt9 for that, or is there more to it?
• At the end of all this, I should have everything I had in my emuNAND into the A9LH sysNAND, correct; or is there something I have to do the switch?
• Is it safe to be on sysNAND when using A9LH? I mean, updating it as a few button clicks away. I know you can start Decrypt9 before the Home Menu to resolve such a case, but again I'm paranoid.
• If using a CFW supporting A9LH, specifically AuReiNand, do I have to constantly update it when new firmware releases?
• Is there anything else I should know about when using A9LH, like homebrew issues, CIA problems, etc.?

Again, I'm terribly sorry that another thread like this one is in the forums, but I'm just terrified to pull off the mistake of the century here (I'm a bit clumsy...and I really like my 3DS).

Honestly, go for it you will be fine. You seem to have researched well. It's not so bad and great once you've done it.

Back when I did it, I started from step 4 and I already had emunand. I'm not sure how rednand helps, but everything in that guide has most definitely improved over time and it's far easier than it ever was. Just be prepared for a VERY LONG process to go through. It's really easy though so it's hard to even mess up whatsoever. I'd say go for it, I've never encountered any failures from any of my friends who attempted it.

You'll be fine. Tips: Dont do it tired. Or stop halfway and go to bed. You may find the next day the guide has changed from where you left off (seriously, didnt realise til near the end! ) Take your time. Scroll through each step so you know where you are.

I would go through the guide from the beginning, there could be parts of the early parts you don't have. E.g. I had a o3ds that I got on 2.1 and skipped to Part 5 after getting my OTP, updating to 9.2 with a game and setting up emuNAND only to find that I didn't have the backups I needed and didn't have FBI in my Health and Safety. So start from the beginning and read every step, and only skip it if you know it doesn't apply to you.

I also did it from step 4 without any problem whatsoever. I have recently swapped my nands as well since it's much more practical. Just make sure you have a working sysNand dump ( pre A9LH ) so that you can restore it if you face any problems later.

I had the exact same setup as you -- N3DSXL, 9.2 sysNAND, 10.7 emuNAND. You don't say what CFW you have, but I had/have Cakes. I switched to A9LH two days ago.

I started on part 4 except in the Getting Started part it says to set MenuHax to Type 1 and change the trigger to D-pad down. Don't forget that.

Because I already had Cakes, I chose that Part 5 route, and was able to incorporate some of that.

If aren't sure, just do some more research and make sure you are well rested. Seriously, I fucked up my 3DS and had to send it out to get repaired because I was stupid and did everything half asleep. Make sure you are dedicated to this project, because once your start, there's no going back when you are half way through.

I'll get around to it eventually because I already did a N3DS that was stock (much easier IMO) but oh well.

It's pretty easy. People on here like to feel smart because they have a9lh installed,fact of the matter is that an idiot could do it if they follow directions well. You will be alright.

You should go for it! Today I successfully retrieved my second OTP from a New 3DS.
I always tend to follow MrMario2011s tutorial up til the 27th minute where it goes to the compiling part, which BTW you dont need to follow since you have a homebrew tool for that.

Sorry to thread jump but reading the guide 99% of everything is done in rednand. Which seems safe as if that bricks you can boot into sysnand by removing the sd.....but the final step is to restore the sysnand from a backup, is that actually needed and if so why?

It's worth making the switch in my opinion. It might seem a bit scary at first, but as long as you follow Plailect's guide, everything should work out fine. I've done 2 N3DSes and 1 O3DS without issue.

Must have been a bit hard to go through; hope it worked out at the end. I'm pretty sure I have the requirements to skip to step 4 (since steps 1-3 is getting emuNAND/redNAND on the system).

Will do. Being able to save your system from even a sysNAND brick is definitely something I'll keep in handy.

That must have been pretty bad. I'm guessing you missed something throughout the steps, but at least you got it repaired (right?). I'm in a good condition now, I just have to be into this for a few hours.

From what I'm hearing, it should be pretty foolproof. I'm in it to have the ability to save any potential bricks that I might cause, but it's your decision to make.

It's so that it doesn't conflict with triggered apps integrated in A9LH I think.

Once you get the whole thing set up, you'll see that prior to going into sysNAND you will have access to some apps that, among other things, can rescue you from a hard brick without needing a hard mod.

The ironic thing is that the most likely hard brick you will ever risk will be the during the process of getting A9LH!

Well really the only thing thats outdated is the last part which is compiling, and since we now have SafeA9LHInstaller you really dont need to do any of that. just follow the guide to the dot til the 27th minute (which is restoring the SysNAND) and then switch to part 5 of the guide and youre good to go

By the way, set aside a lot of time for this. You want to do it slowly and carefully.

I don't see how people can do this in an hour or two. It took me like five hours. But I was very very cautious.

I think the people that can do it so quickly are the ones that have already downgraded before and know what they're doing. Everyone stresses how you should take your time, so that's why it takes so long for a newbie to do it.
