How to create a Custom Theme.

On your PC
1.Download the latest version of the HBL mod attached to the first post here.
2.Extract the boot.3dsx and ignoredtitles.txt to the root of your 3ds SD card. Replace the boot.3dsx if necessary.


On your 3ds
1.Run the Homebrew Launcher via your preferred hax method.
2.Tap the configuration button located on the top left corner of the bottom screen.

3.Tap the Homebrew Launcher Updater icon and follow the onscreen instructions
to make sure you have the latest version with all the new features.

4.Tap the configuration button located on the top left corner of the bottom screen again.

5.And now tap the Theme Settings icon.

6.Here you'll find many customizable options so just explore and have fun.
When you're done with your theme it will be saved on a file named hbltheme.cfg which is found on the Default folder.
Folder directory below:


SD:/gridlauncher/themes/Default/hbltheme.cfg


To make a new theme you can make a copy of Default folder in the same directory and name it whatever you want. Then you can switch between them.

Create your custom backgrounds.

1.For the top screen create a 400 x 240 PNG. Name it wallpapertop.png
2.For the bottom screen create a 320 x 240 PNG. Name it wallpaperbottom.png
3.For the top screen on info pages create a 400 x 240 PNG. Name it wallpapertopinfo.png
4.For the bottom screen on non-grid pages create a 320 x 240 PNG.Name it wallpaperbottomnongrid.png and place them on your theme’s folder.

You may want to turn the water off in the settings so you can see the wallpaper properly.

Troubleshooting
​

If your backgrounds are not showing up correctly on the homebrew launcher when you are saving your pictures as .png make sure you remove any kind of transparency. In programs like paint.net manually change the color depth to 32-bit or 16-bit. 8-bit does not work properly.
Another workaround is to open your pictures with microsoft paint and saving them again as png. Paint will remove any kind of transparency and fix your backgrounds.

Updated! Add icons and banners to your themes and folders.​

To add icons to your themes and folders you must create their .smdh icons. I recommend using this website for it.
Use 48x48 .png pictures for the icons.
When you are done with your .smdh files you must rename them.
The folder icon must be named folder.smdh This Icon will be displayed on the folder select screen.
The theme icon must be named theme.smdh This Icon will be displayed on the theme select screen.
Smdh Placement:
The theme.smdh goes inside your themes folder:
SD:/gridlauncher/themes/Themename/theme.smdh


The folder.smdh goes inside the desired folder:
Example
SD:/gridlauncher/folders/Games/folder.smdh


You can also add a banner to your custom theme which will be displayed on theme selector screen with the .smdh icon. You can make a regular banner or a full screen banner.


To make a regular banner
1.Create a 400x222 pixel PNG image. It’s recommend to use transparency in this image so it doesn't cover the wallpaper entirely.
2.Put whatever you want on the banner image.
3.Save it as theme-banner.png.
4.Place the banner image on your theme’s folder.

To make a full screen banner (With full screen banners the app's title, author, description and panel will not be displayed, so the banner can be seen full screen)

Add background to your apps icons.​

To add background to your apps icons you must create the following pictures:


appbackground.png: 56 x 56 pixels. This is the background for unselected apps or empty spaces


appbackgroundselected.png: 56 x 56 pixels. This is the background for the currently selected app


cartbackground.png: 59 x 59 pixels. This is the background for the region free loader / cart when it is not selected


cartbackgroundselected.png: 59 x 59 pixels. This is the background for the region free loader / cart when it is currently selected


The launcher will automatically detect whether the images have an alpha channel so it makes no difference whether the images have transparency or not. They will automatically be masked to the correct shape with rounded corners and the tab for the cart icons. You will get an error in log.txt if the images are invalid or the wrong size. You do not need to change any settings - the presence of the images is enough (as with wallpapers).

Grid icons can be customised with overlay images. This includes the icon for the cart launcher. Icon overlay files must all be 64x64 PNG images and should be placed within the theme directory. They can contain transparency, and this is recommended for the best visual effect (such as rounded corners).

Create your custom progress wheel animated icon.
You can make your animated custom progress wheel graphics. You’ll see it in the select titles screen. To make one just create 36 x 36 PNG images for each of the 16 frames (alpha optional) called progressWheelFrame1.png to progressWheelFrame16.png and put them in the theme folder. If any of the frame images is missing or incorrect then none of them will be used and the default wheel will be shown.
When you’re finished place your .png on your theme’s folder.

Here are instructions if you want to make your own BGM.bin


1.Download an MP3/MP4/whatever you want as BGM.
2.Load it up in audacity/any audio editor.
3.Delete all of the tracks but one (If it is stereo, make it mono, for example. The result should leave you with a mono file.)
4.Edit how you like it (make it louder, longer, faster, stronger).
5.Change the project rate to 44100Hz if it isn't already.
6.Export it as a WAV (Microsoft) signed 16bit PCM file.
7.Rename it to BGM.bin and put it in your themes folder.


You can make the following BGMs
Background music: BGM.bin
Cursor move sound: movesound.bin
Select something sound: selectsound.bin
Exit any menu sound: backsound.bin
Splashscreen sound: bootsound.bin


Important! Remove any kind of metadata if your sound files includes them. In audacity, after selecting Export Audio and selecting your saving location an Edit Metadata window will open. Make sure to press on Clear and then OK to have clear sounds without any distortions.

Add a splash screen to your theme. This pictures will be displayed when the homebrew launcher is starting up.


To make a splashscreen

Thanks buddy! I've managed to separate the configuration of the theme into a separate file without too much effort. I need to do some testing to check it works properly, but will then be able to upload a version in which you can import themes by overwriting just the theme config file and leave the rest of your configuration intact.

I need to do some testing to check it works properly, but will then be able to upload a version in which you can import themes by overwriting just the theme config file and leave the rest of your configuration intact.

Hi mate, beta 2.6 is up now and adds a separate config file for the theme. So the custom colours now get saved into /hbltheme.cfg, and this is the file which needs to be copied and overwritten when sharing themes.

It's a real screenshot from my 3ds. It's possible. You don't see arrows or page indicators because it's only one page of icons. Two pages or more will show the arrows.

Great to see so many themes being posted! Finally screenshots work in beta 27 of the grid launcher now. Press X at any time in the launcher then copy hbl-grid-screenshot-bottom.png and hbl-grid-screenshot-top.png from your SD card. You need to rotate the image 90 degrees for now but I'm trying to fix that. Anyway, here is a screenshot of the dark theme I'm using and I've attached the cfg if others want to use it.
