I had to start from the beginning, but everything is great now. Thanks!

One more thing... I hear that rxtools supports updating the emunand, but a lot of the info around seems outdated.. up to which nand is safe to update and how is the update best done?

For the O3DS up to the latest firmware - 10.1.0-27
For the N3DS up to firmware - 9.5.0-23

O3DS you can use the System updater once you're in Emunand - Sysupdater.cia with the firmware files - BigBlueMenu / Devmenu with the firmware files.
It's a matter of preference.

For the N3DS you can use - Sysupdater.cia with the firmware files - BigBlueMenu / Devmenu with the firmware files.
Again, a matter of preference.
You cannot update with the System updater, since the N3DS cannot go to the latest firmware.

I need some solid advice here. I'm wrecking my brain.

Device: N3DS XL v9.0
Goal: Play any game, any region as installed .CIAs using homebrew (no GW or SKY).

For CFW...
Reinand or RxTools or Pasta? Which is best? I will need to add Free Multi Patcher to Rei and RX?

For CIA manager/installer...
FBI or BigBlueMenu? Which is better?

Thanks

i have been following this tutorial https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-installing-rxtools-custom-firmware-3ds-and-2ds.390867/
but i just cant boot to the rxtools for the first time with this link https://dukesrg.github.io/?rxTools/sys/code.bin
"rxTools.dat has moved to rxTools/sys/code.bin. As such, you need the new MSET ROP chain (if you're using MSET) which is included
in the nds installer (requires flashcard). There may be other other ways of installing this." i dont understand, where do you put the rxtools.dat? and in my root i must have the rxtools folder with the other folders like sys inside it correct? thx
rxtools(02.10)
Edit:nvm i have installed the mset and it has booted thx

First World N00b Here!

Can I use the same Micro Sd card for R4i Sdhc 3ds Rts 2015 & Sky3ds (Or Gateway 3ds) to hold games & Ect?

The Micro Sd Card I will be getting is a SanDisk 64GB Extreme Micro SD SDHC Class 10 UHS-I U3 Card That I will format to a Fat32

I'm getting a 3DS XL.

Depending on the Firmware I will either go to Sky3ds or Gateway 3ds.

I would greatly appreciate a Response.

If your firmware is 9.2 or less don't waste money buying a gateway card, rxTools is free and it can play all the games on cia format.

If you are above 9.2 Sky3ds will be the only option for you to play 3DS games.

If you use Sky3ds you won't be able to put anything else on the memory card except roms, this is because Diskwriter uses it's own format and takes all the memory available.

You could do that with Gateway I guess, but with free custom firmwares that do the exact same thing is just a waste of money.

Just buy another micro sd card for the R4i, 16/32 GB are pretty cheap on amazon now days and will save you from the hassle of changing it everytime you want to play a DS game.

Just read that there is a new method to boot into emunand without using the mset 4.x , I want the new 3ds method . Hopefully not risky and not like a trail and error thing like the profile exploit .

Do you want a cookie and a cofee with your request sir?...

Jokes aside, it is called Themehax/HomeMenuHax, there isn't many guides about how to install it to launch CFW's but it is possible and the information is scarttered everywhere on the forums, search it and you'll find it in the Themehax threads.

By the way, it is trial and error, what works for some people need tweaks for many others and on top of that, the hack itself boots around 2/3 times rezulting in freezes the other 1/3, so there is a lot of resets in the everyday use of the hack.

TL;DR There is no magical perfect way to do it as you want it to be, maybe in the future but not for now.

SMT 4..... CIA file is 1.8 GB, dev menu/big blue menu/FBi all tell me it requires a whopping 5.2 GB of free space on my SD card (those figures are off the top of my head and not 100% accurate)

Is that right?

I haven't been following the CFW scene all to well so I got couple of questions.

What is rxtools exactly? If I run Pasta CFW on my 2DS should I update? and what are the differences?

rxTools is a CFW that allows you to run unsigned cia games, it is a lot better than pasta because it is compatible with emunand up to the latest firmware 10.1 in O3DS/2DS.

So you can run all the games that require over 9.2, play online and there is no brick risk because emunand can be backed up/restored at any time if some cia installation goes wrong, it also has many other features like decryption tool and many other dumping goodies, it has a higher boot rate, rarely freezes.

rxTools is the best CFW for O3DS/2DS as of today.

hello
I'm new here, so sorry for my noob question.
Just got a 2DS for my little daughter, it's on firmware 8.1.0-19.
I'v got no linker

What would be the easiest way to play .cia games on it ?

thank you

rxTools, use this guide: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-installing-rxtools-custom-firmware-3ds-and-2ds.390867/

Thank you. Very much, I have found a 64 gb for less than 30$ I appreciate the response. I will use two micro sd cards. :')

I will be very aware of the firmware of the 3ds before I buy the flashcarts.

You will need to add free multi patcher to all just to be safe. As of now, pasta is part of rxtools. But rxtools is still not 100% steady on N3DS yet (only surviving via nightlies). Reinand is the go-to CFW for N3DS users who want minimalistic options. Game and go.

Cia manager/installer, FBI is more in depth with its options but is black and white. BigBlue only lets you install and uninstall. Try both and see which one tickles your pickle.

Redownload the .cia. Could be buggy. Mine didn't ask anything of the sort. All I needed was double the cia size.

Noob Question 19: This Time, It's Really, Really Personal

Would it be possible to patch the emunand (Rxmode/N3DS 9.0) in order to use a Supercard DS One?
I heard about a patch that removed a sort of "black list" of DS linkers encoded into the 3DS firmware. Then again, I have doubts about this, I don't think it could work because of the method the DSone uses in order to launch itself (overriding the default menu at boot on DS phat/lite).

DS flashcarts that already didn't work with the 1st version of the 3DS won't work. It does not matter if you install an older whitelist to the system or not.
I believe DS1 is one of those.

Does the latest Gateway update have the multi-rom menu fixed? I heard that updating to the current emunand version breaks it, I wanted to update soonish for upcoming pokemon events.

Of course. The latest update was released a long time ago already.
O3DS: emunand completely supported up to latest firmware (10.1)
N3DS emunand completely supported up to firmware 9.5

Trying to find out why certain CIA's I've installed dont seem to work, gives me that error "an error has occured, will shut down" Some games make it past the opening screen, even can input the characters name etc, some games hang as soon as I launch them. Using 7.2 sysnand and emunand , rxtools 2.6 and fbi . have about 6 gb left on my card and installed some games sucessfully, but only about 50%.

did you update your emunand?
And are you getting the CIAs from a trustworthy source?

I didnt update my emunand, its 7.2 still from my sysnand. I saw that most games require up to like 4,7x versions so I thought I would be fine. The source seems good, since a lot of the other cias installed and played fine, but I guess I could retry another source to confirm.
