It just takes the pixels and makes voxels out of them, it doesn't actually create a stereoscopic effect. That's different all together.

You take the pixels from a layer, right? Now stay with me. And you render those at a greater depth, here's the best part, than another layer. BOOM!

The Game Boy emulator for Virtual Boy allows the depth of the background layer to be set. As ferofax's post suggests, for many games this looks awful. Think of a 2D platformer where your character is running along at the "regular" depth on a platform that's somewhere off in the distance. I've seen it, it's unpleasant. That said, there are probably games where this approach could have decent results. The Zelda games might work fairly well, for example: the world sitting "underneath" Link, the enemies, items, etc. There are probably still occasions where it looks bad or wrong, but top-down games generally are probably the best candidates for 3D without the need for per-game tweaking.

Hmm...FCEUMM3DS certainly doesn't have the speed at the moment, it might work on the New 3ds.

Gameyob still has a lot of over head available especially if you disable the filter. This might be plausible to implement for gameyob on the Old3ds.

There were some personal modifications I made to the NDS gameyob, like flagging bytes that get executed as ASM code, and bytes that get loaded into RAM (like levels, music, gfx). This was accompanied by a program that would take that info, and make a disassembly of the ROM (obviously, it only had what was done in game to work with, but could fill in some blanks). This could be useful, because I've always wanted to make or modify a gameboy emulator to go beyond the original capabilities, and knowing where functions are, like load GFX, Play Music, etc would help. It shouldn't be too hard to be able to do an entire soundtrack replacement with custom MP3's (other than making and looping them). Same could be said about overlaying high-res GFX (which could include depth info)

Holy hell that looks cool. It's so laggy though, and it kind of sucks that everything appears to be the same depth.
This could be done better with SNES games, giving each layer a different 3D depth.

At best you can take the different sprite layers and add stereoscopic effects to them, but it's going to look shitty on most games. A feature worth having though, even if just for fun.

The video is laggy because of the recording software. It runs at full speed on my PC:
