Looking at my 3DS…

Pokémons
Mario Platformers (3D World / NSMB2)
Yoshi 3D
Sonic Generations (sorta meh compared to the console/PC version)
Dead or Alive Dimensions

That's all I really have. The Mario and Yoshi games don't bring a whole lot to the table, but they're fun enough.

I'm also looking for other games, not sure which ones to get though.

There is also the essentials list.

Stay away from:
Paper Mario Sticker Star (Worst by far)
Mario and Luigi: Dream Team (Extremely slow and dull compared to previous games in the series)
Cave Story 3D (Disorienting graphics style, slippery control on 3DS, rare and overpriced)
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity (Not as good as previous in the series, but not that bad overall)

buy:
Shovel Knight (Excellent retro-styled platformer with lots of replay value)
Cubic Ninja

buy on sale:
Kid Icarus (Fun, story-driven action game)
Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Doesn't compare to the original though IMO)

meh:
Pokemon Gen 6 (It's Pokemon)

other:
Humble Nindie Bundle has Mighty Switch Force for cheap, which is short but fun.

Don't stay away from Mario and Luigi: Dream Team! It's a great sequel in the series!

Ignore the GBATemp "Essentials" as the older titles have away more mentions there without the proper merit.

Also, Tales of the Abyss and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon are great!

I own:
MK7
Super Mario 3D Land
Mario and Luigi Dream Team (I couldn't finish it because of my 3DS breaking)
Paper Mario Sticker Star
Super Mario Bros 2
PilotWings Resort
yeah, that's all, couldn't buy more games since my 3DS broke in February 2014.

shovel knight
mk 7
persona Q
shin megami tensei devil survivor overclocked/ shin megami tensei IV
pokemon gen 6
fire emblem
might switch force (1 and 2)
azure striker gunvolt

This is a pretty lazy topic. What kind of games are you into? Its seems from what you chose, you like games with multiplayer and other general nintendo games. I would suggest:
Rune Factory or the harvest moon games
Fantasy Life
Mario Party
Link Between Worlds

i have only played Link Between Worlds and Phoenix Wright vs Prof Layton and both games were fantastic! I ended up purchasing Link Between because it was that good.

Rune Factory 4 is one of the games on any console I have played the most - well over 200 hours and loved it all.

Fantasy Life was also great - over 100 hours on that and didn't even finish every job.

Great bang for the buck and both very fun if you like that style game.

Just off the top of my head:

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D
Shovel Knight
Cave Story (eShop)
Mighty Switch Force
Mighty Switch Force 2
SteamWorld Dig
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse

pokemon omega ruby&y
rune factory 4
MH3&4
xenoblade chronicles
super smash bros.
kingdom hearts
all mario games
and fantasy life.

I could grab my 3DS and check what games I have and list my favorites, but it would be easier if you checked the Essentials link further up, most games there are worth checking out. It looks like the thread hasn't been updated in awhile so there are a lot of newer games there with very little votes, don't let that discourage you from checking them out though. Even some of the ones with just 1 vote are worth checking out.

Paper Mario Sticker Star - Pales in comparison to the first two, but still a very fun and enjoyable game and one of my favorite 3DS games, so I would definitely recommend to NOT stay away from it. I might actually like it a little better than Super Paper Mario.
Mario & Luigi Dream Team Bros - Mixed feelings about this one but overall enjoyable and I would still recommend giving it a try to see if it's right for you.
Cave Story 3D - Vastly underrated IMO, the graphics style adds a lot of atmosphere to the game and there is a lot of detail to the backgrounds and environments that just isn't possible with the 2D graphics style of the original, other than that it's still the same great game. I don't see where you're coming from with the controls as I've played both and I never felt like the controls were impairing me in any way. The game is hard, but the controls aren't to blame for it.
I think you should avoid telling people what not to play unless they specifically request it, since they may avoid them and miss out on games they otherwise could have enjoyed quite a lot.
