Looking at sticked thread 'WiI U Games' the list follows.

Essential: 18+
[61] Nintendoland (party game)
[56] New Super Mario Bros U (platformer)
[28] Legend of Zelda: Wind waker HD (action adventure)
[24] Mario Kart 8 (racing)
[22] Super Mario 3D world (platformer)
[21] ZombiU (survival horror)

Note: Nintendoland is very old. WindWaker is a game most people already completed, twice. What holds up interest is MarioKart 8 and the two Mario plattformers. The recommended list follows...

Recommended: 8->17
[16] Trine 2: Director's cut (adventure platformer)
[15] Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed (racing)
[15] Lego City Undercover (action/adventure)
[15] Pikmin 3 (strategy/adventure)
[13] Call of duty: Black Ops 2 (FPS)
[12] Assassin's Creed 3 (action adventure)
[11] Batman: Arkham city; armored edition (action adventure)
[11] Super smash bros for wiiu (fighting game)
[10] New Super Luigi U (platformer)
[9] Nano Assault Neo (shoot 'em up)
[9] Monster hunter 3 ultimate (action adventure)
[8] Bit.Trip Presents... Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien (platformer)
[8] Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (fighting)
[8] Need for Speed Most Wanted U (racing)

Trine2, Sonic Racing, CoD, AS 3, Batman and NFS Wanted is titles that also is playable on PS3. Whats left that looks fun is SmashBros, Luigi U, Monster Hunter and maybe Lego Undercover.

So in total of a list of 20 theres 6 games that would be worth playing. Maybe Pikmin as well.. so 7 .
Is it worth to buy a WiiU or should you wait?

The main flaw about the list is that games gather more votes the older they get, and launch titles (especially the ones bundled with the console) the most. Oh, and it actually requires people to, y'know, VOTE in it. I think I've seen at least twice the people praising bayonetta in threads about it than in the actual list. But it'd be an impossible job to keep track if I started adding votes in other threads.
And despite not having much of third party support, some first party titles sort of fly under the radar. Donkey kong country: tropical freeze is an awesome game (though pretty similar to the prequel), but people seem to forget about it.

So all in all: the list is a starting point to have an indication of what games may be good. It's in no way a definite list.

As for the 'should you wait?', I'd certainly say no. There will be other games, but if you can't find enough games you will actually like right now, then you never will.

Do you have Wii? If not then you can consider if having the entire Wii and GameCube library at your disposal is desirable (with a softmod).

I bought a used second "console only" (no gamepad) off eBay for moding and my bedroom.

For my family it is worth it. My boys were given a choice of what they wanted and the Wii U was a unanimous 1st place. Nintendo is still has that magic for them.

I personally think there's plenty of great Wii U games. Super Mario 3D World is worth it by itself, but Zelda: Wind Waker, Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8 etc. make it a win. Even Sonic Lost World is actually decent despite the reviews.

I bought it as a drop-in replacement for my modded Wii because the vWii side of the console is fully exploitable and Nintendo have shown no interest in patching the exploits, but I've bought more actual Wii U games than I expected.

And of course, the kernel exploit for the Wii U mode itself is going to be released very soon so now is the opportunity to upgrade the the newest exploitable firmware while you can.

Well, I got my Basic for CZK 2800 (roughly €102) new, and I dare say it was worth it. However I'd never pay full price for it (even though I'm a Nin fan - my 3 Gamecubes, 2 Wii's, and one DS could tell stories :-D ).

It is a problem of oportunity cost?
Are you going to buy something else if you don't buy a Wii U?
What? (If there are alternatives those should be weighted)

I don't think the situation will change too much if you wait. If you are waiting because of... waiting... then just buy one whenever you see one cheap.
If there were competing alternatives things would be different IMHO, I would pose some possible scenarios:
  • You never had a Wii and you would like to play the many great Wii games: Get the Wii U
  • You never had a PS3 and also want a PS3: Get the PS3, it is today a better option
  • Same thing as above for an X360
  • You want a PS4: Buy the Wii U, the PS4 is awfully expensive and has not so many games
  • Xbox One: Pfff, the above times 2, it means wait.

The only essential game is Mario Kart 8 for its existence then you have Smash and Bayonetta 2 worth playing on it.

Meh, it's not worth buying the console for the price it is unless you're fine playing a dozen or so games.

Actually, if she plans to buy the console anyway I think it would be the same waiting or buying it now.
I bought mine more than two years ago for €190, and I haven't seen it getting much cheaper since then.
Even so I should probably had bought a PS3.

Black Fridays (I'll never be part of them unless online sales) have become international so that plus unannounced in-store reductions are worth a check than buying it for full price.

Recently, when I have time, I´m only playing one of these three games on my Wii U: Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors, and there is still a LOT of content in these three titles for me to unlock.

What I like from Nintendo games is that most of them give me a lot of replayability, so if you think that a good console = games with many hours of replayability, I think the Wii U can satisfy that. It may not have a festival of titles like the other consoles, but I find some of them pretty solid. In the end, every new console already has very good titles to justify buying, it´s only a matter of personal preference.

Besides, there are some promising new games that you won´t find in that list so soon, because people will probably forget to vote again for newer games.

I only bought the Wii U for the Nintendo exclusive games. Anything 3rd party I will just buy for my PS4/PS3. I think buying a Wii U was worth it for me. Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Hyrule Warriors, Captain Toad, Windwaker, etc. I just hope there are more good games to come because I havnt had a need to buy any more Wii U games for a few months now.

For something 'right around the corner' we know next to nothing about it. Also, the Wii U has many great games now whereas the NX is a complete unknown. We don't even know if it will be a traditional gaming console.

I think there was a little sarcasm there...

imo the Wii U is a great console. I know commercially its not fairing too well against the Xbox One and PS4, but if you're a long time Nintendo fan, it's definately worth picking up. I will admit, its not for everyone of course :P. I would like to get an Xbox One someday, but I need to focus on getting a Wii U dev kit first. Not sure how I'm gonna raise the funds, but I'll get there somehow...

No, the NX is right around the corner.
Is that a Gateway "right around the corner™" ?

Start a in home console modding service and advertise on Craig'slist. Try offering a full suite of services such as complete systems and in home training. I would pay a reasonable fee to get PS3 all set up. I know nothing about them and my head spins trying to get brain wrapped around it.

Btw, I purchased a 2nd "console only" and made a post about it over in the hardware sub but no one replied. Maybe I should have put it in the hacking sub. Basically want to know what I should do to check it out and make sure it is ok before my return window closes. The previous owner did not delete his NNID, should that be a problem?
