Hi guys, recently I bought MarioKart 8 it came with version 2.0. I prevoiusly blocked my netgear router to block the following domains to prevent future updates:
  • nus.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
  • nus.cdn.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
  • nus.cdn.shop.wii.com
  • nus.cdn.wup.shop.nintendo.net
  • nus.wup.shop.nintendo.net
I disconnected the WiiU from my internet connection just in case too. Later on I saw MarioKart 8 had more updates to allow some new features so I decided to reconnect my WiiU online and when I started the game it automatically updated the version from 2.0 to 4.0 which was my intention but then another question came to mind, If I blocked the domains beforehand shouldn't it prevented the game version to update? Then it means my WiiU will auto update it's firmware if I have it connected to my router?

Your router will only block http requests, not https.
So your Wii U will be connecting to https://nus.c.shop.nintendowifi.net on port 433 ...not http://nus.c.shop.nintendowifi.net on port 80 which is the one you blocked.
Only certain routers can block https requests.
If you can, block the IP addresses (there's a guide somewhere on the forum??) ...or use another method to block secure url's.
