I have 30 some precision screw heads for a driver and none of them worked. And of course I can't find a rubber band to give more friction, to save my life. Lol
Might need a extraction set from Fry's.

Because I used the OP's list to purchase my new 3ds xl, I wanted to contribute as well.

I want to confirm that QW4015 Black new nintendo 3ds xl brand new out of box has v9.0.0-20U.

I got it from local classified ad in Edmonton, Canada so I don't know when and which store the seller bought it from.

Sorry for super big photos, I reduced photo dimention from 3700 pixels (Width) to 1000 but wasn't enough I guess. Took with DSLR.

Actually, what's the trick to just popping off the face plate on the top screen side? Do I just need to remove the 2 screws under the rubber feet, and it will slide off?

If I can avoid messing with the frame screws, I can leave the stripped one in there. Its the unit i will keep anyway.

i use the stylus... it fits perfectly to pop it off.

I got just the frame swapped. Don't have to mess w the stripped screw. Pain in the ass getting those little square screw covers off but wasn't so bad. (Besides it not looking mint condition on them anymore)

So four hidden screws around the top screen, and top shell will pop off. 2 screws holding back plate on which is supposed to pop off to access memory card.

I know were off the purpose of the thread, but I returned the higher fw unit without a problem.

Customer service girl opened the side flap to see if the unit was just there at all, closed it back and gave mey money back. Lol. I could've put a busted DS lite in there probably. (But that would've been a total dick move not to mention criminal)

I figured they would check the serial on the unit, but she didn't even run it on the receipt against the box. Way to go inventory control. Haha. Everything matched anyway so its fine to even go back on the shelf.

Some employees check, some don't. No employee will ever look based the battery cover though. So if your 3ds breaks, you can technically just swap the black plates of two consoles, and return the bricked one.

That is still return fraud though, and traceable to you if you paid with credit or debit. Possibly even if you bought bricked one with a credit or debit card.

Go for it, the ones in the 1000 range seem to be the first batch's, and only on 9.0.

Well one more reason why paying in cash is best. And Walmart definitely has spotty return checking. At least I returned an unplayed, new unit that can be sold if they toss it back on the shelf.

See, the thing is, I've racked up 35$ in rewards since February by paying for most things by my CC. I even missed out on 500$ worth of purchases when I had it maxed out, but oh well. I don't plan on bricking my 3DS anyways, so I should be in the clear.

I am confused at what you are trying to do. You shouldn't need to do anything with the faceplate for a mobo swap. But anyway, a dab of super glue on the tip of your driver should do the trick. Then dip the tip, presumably with the screw glued to it, in acetone to get the glue off.

I originally was going to do a mobo swap. But due to the stripped screw, I just did the faceplate swap. I was worried about them checking both serial numbers, but they never checked any.

I heard about the superglue trick, but probably the rubber band will do it if I ever need to get in there. Either that or I heard a sharp xacto knife can etch a new + shape that a bit will grip.

Faceplate was easy to do except for those little rubber screw concealers, which were a PITA to get off without looking torn up.

I have some high-tack packaging tape I used with those rubber plugs and they came right out. Getting the damn thing open even after the screws are out, that's the hard part. You indeed should have no reason to open the screen part unless you're trying to make a custom shell
