Hmm ok then.

I already formatted my emunand and whatnot, is it ok if I use a game cart to update my system nand?

Just be sure the card won't take you over 9.x though I'm sure you know this.
Why do you want to update though?

Play cartridges on sysnand and everything else on emunand. Seems the simplest way. Only issue is the Smash bros update.

Honestly, save the headache and run GW Classic Mode. I had the same mindset but I never live outside of emuNAND now. And you don't risk the chance of upgrading sysNAND on accident.

CFW, with a risk of permanent damage to the system. Otherwise, no.

What risk might that be? CFW runs off a modified emunand. The only risk would be downgrading your console in order to be able to run it (which people downgrade for the reasons as well). Or perhaps if you installed something stupid.

Wait. I'm not familiar with Regionthree, but could you run the Save Data Transfer Tool with that trick? That's been a point of speculation in trying to get retail saves over to CIAs, but the mode swapping made it impossible to attempt.

Yaru seemed ok, but it pretty much just does exactly what I thought of, just run things on system nand.

I don't really want to reboot my 3ds just to reboot into x mode whenever I want to do x.

If you're in emuNAND, you're going to have to reboot it regardless to get into sysNAND. I'd just take the extra 5 seconds to boot GW Classic Mode. Really, you will be saving yourself potential headache if your sysNAND accidentaly gets a firmware update, or you pop in a kart that requires a firmware update and you click the "accept" button on accident. Seriously, save yourself the headache and another potential "I upgraded sysNAND on accident" thread.
