i have a gateway 3ds which is awesome, but i would like to use my roms on my 3ds xl, which is on the latest fw 9.2.0-20E the only games i'm interested in using on the XL are fantasy life and omega ruby, maybe 2-3 other games upon their release.

is it worth buying a sky3ds, or should i wait to see what gateway comes up with? they're probably going to do another christmas thing.

At this point anything that anyone says will be speculation. If you have the money, go ahead and get a sky3ds, if you can't wait. If you can wait, which I would, stick with gateway and just let it happen as it does.

Considering Gateway have announced support for 9.X is on the way, and they've never lied about upcoming updates; don't waste your money

If you don't even have 10 games that you want to play, just buy a Sky3DS. It will do everything that you want and is available now, whereas otherwise you get to wait on the Gateway release schedule of "whenever the hell they actually get around to it".

i dont think i would even suggest anyone to buy a sky3ds even if they didnt already own a gateway and a 4.x compatible console, but as you do own a gateway and 4.x console already your in a better position than most that are waiting for 9.x support from gateway....dont waste your money
they're probably going to do another christmas thing.
....errr the last Christmas release was the brick code iirc.....lets hope they don't to that again :P.....hopefully they are feeling more merry this year :)

But we don't know how Sky3DS works. If it's exploit based, it can be patched. Then you're either stuck with a useless flashcart or an outdated system (unable to play later games).

On the other hand Gateway might not bring emunand to 9.X, so there's the same issue. It's a gamble on either Gateway bringing emunand to 9.X, or Sky3DS being unpatchable. Given OP already owns a Gateway there's no risk in waiting a few weeks to see how things pan out, rather than buy a Sky3DS for what could be a very short run.

There's nothing speculative about the 10 game limit on Sky3DS. You can try to use the swap trick to play extra games but you run the risk of SD card corruption/lost saves.

If you feel like 10 games for $80 USD or however much it costs is a good deal for you, then go for that.

Fair enough. I'm still kind of in the camp of waiting for someone else to figure out Smea's kernel exploit. At the same time, I'm still personally making the wait just to see what the scene produces. I don't have a lot of 3DS games that I want to play, but at the same time, the Gateway does offer more. At the same same time, a kernel exploit would offer everything at the low low price of nothing. I guess it all depends on how patient the OP can be.

ssspwn is not a kernel exploit....that was just drama seeking....until proof is actually shown that it has kernel access everyone should just accept that it does not....and as for "free"......cubic ninja is selling for pretty much the same price as a gateway card now days, so you can either gamble on pretty low/zero odds with cubic ninja allowing roms, or wait and see what gateway puts out, or but sky3ds and be happy with 10 games......most local choice would be to just wait it out

I'm not talking about SSSpwn. I'm talking about that article that Smea posted on his site awhile back where he talked about having kernel access. He chose to release SSSpwn as userland access only as he didn't want to enable people to pirate using his work. That means that a kernel exploit does exist that works all of the way up through 9.x though, and it will just take somebody dedicated enough to find it. Part of me also believes that SSSpwn may be the first step in finding the path to that exploit, but obviously I don't have the skill set necessary to do absolutely anything to see if that's even remotely true.

his old exploit is the same thing gateway use i.e 4.x only, the first time he showed anything working above 4.x was sspwn on 6.x using the DS profile exploit that wasnt fixed until 7.x, after 7.x was released he needed to find a new entry point for sspwn which came in the form of cubic ninja

There's no reason to buy the Sky3DS when it has severely limited functionality and you already have a Gateway.
Gateway is sure to have superior functionality, they already pretty much confirmed that it won't be limited to 10 games, and it might have functionality beyond just playing ROMs like it does on 4.x although only time will tell.

Ah, well, that's what I get for not reading closer. Ah well. Either way, I'm sure something may come eventually. If both Sky3DS and Gateway have the ability to run ROMs on 9.x, then it doesn't seem to presumptuous to think that a software based solution could emerge. Just highly unlikely if Gateway is the only team really making progress for piracy. lol

yeah but its been said all along ever since gateway was announced and it wasn't until fairly recently that anything even close was released for 4.x and even that came in the form of a leak rather than a publicly backed and being developed free alternative........i have no doubt that at some point someone who has the brains to back up their desires will add some new features to the leaked cfw....but right now its seems to be pretty much abandoned at the road side with nobody wanting to touch it like a dead animal, truth is no devs have shown any desire to make a public and free CFW for 4.x so i don't think we would see many talented dev's step forward to do so with anything above 4.x either

such is the way of the scene now days

Frankly I don't think that there is a universally correct answer to your question fatboynate, it really depends on what you're looking for and whether you want to get that sooner rather than later.

As it stands you have 3 main options open to you:
  1. Get a 4.x device and a Gateway or equivalent card.
This is the best documented option available with the most certainty of what features you will obtain.
Course, since you already have a 9.x device - this isn't really an option for you.
  2. Get a SKY3DS, but be aware of a few provisions.
Right now SKY3DS is the superior card for 9.x - but it comes with some significant drawbacks.
We don't know the reliability for the future (will the card remain updated as time goes on), nor do we know what features will change if any.
If you get one, you should get one under the assumption that you will be getting 10 games on it - no more, no less.
  3. Get a Gateway, but be aware of a few provisions.
You can hedge your bets on the established reputation of the Gateway team and trust that they will provide more features in due time.
Even if the Gateway 9.x functionality will start off with single-ROM function only - odds are that if they CAN expand on that they will.
If you don't mind having single-ROM functionality, perhaps buy a few 4gb microSD's for personal benefit.
Then this may well prove the "better" option.
  4. "Technically" option 4 would be to wait for now untill Gateway provides more information and then make a more informed decision.
But risking missing the deadline for Christmas if you want to hit that.
So what it boils down to is, do you believe that SKY is worth the downsides it comes with or not.
Many somewhat rightfully believe that the approach they took is questionable - but others rightfully point out that its a sellers market.
If you don't agree to their terms, you either go to the competition or you wait for a better offer to present itself.
Good things generally come to those who wait.

Meaning the "best choice" is one you have to weigh for yourself.
Is 10 games at $8 per game acceptable? Then the plug-and-play nature of SKY offers a good package under questionable restrictions.
Is risking single-ROM inconvenience acceptable? Then the more established Gateway offers an existing reputation going forward making them potentially less of a wildcard.
