Speaking with Reuters, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata revealed the company's intention to create brand new hardware and software for release in emerging markets around the world, including China. Nintendo aim to market the new console to the middle class in those countries:

It would be difficult to enter those markets if we didn't create something new... For the mass market you need to provide something that most of the middle class can afford.

This implies weaker technology or simplified features compared to the 3DS and Wii U.

In the land of the POPStation and SuperJoy, I believe only weaker technology and simplified features will suffice. :P

I'm interested in how Nintendo would create something of value to the emerging markets, when the smartphone business is already gnawing at the gaming industry's markets with more functionality than just the games..

*Cough* *cough* iQue.

Nintendo's been present in China for years, all that changes now is that they will be able to release systems under their own name. There's no reason for them to release a low-cost DSi - China already has the iQue DSi. Hell, they even have the iQue 3DS XL. Maybe they're planning to kick off the home consoles there, who knows?

A shame they're not doubling down on the British market. From what I can gather, iQueue would be an instant success.
That would be awesome, yes.

Iwata: Guys! We're bringing iQueue to the UK, as we see it's kind of missing in your country! :D

*six months later*

Iwata: I have no idea why those stiff upper lip pricks won't buy our stuff...

I know that's a Chinese word and has its own original pronunciation (that I can't begin to fathom, not being familiar with the romanization), but to me it will always be...

Anyway, I can't wait to see what the new hardware looks like. And I hope it's hackable :tpi:
