Hi Guys,
Been Lurking for a while now trying to suss out how to come across a <4.5 fw 3ds XL. So I have one lined up on ebay that has 2012 copyright on the box which is promising. I requested the serial number but can not find any guides regarding Australian serial numbers so was hoping someone could help me. Serial Number is SAF1020xxxx x .. I hope that is enough numbers to let me know either way if it is what I am after.
Thanks in advance fellow aussies (and anyone else who helps)
Cheers guys!

The highest serial# confirmed to be 4.5.0 on the GBATemp Wiki is SW1278xxxx x so you should be good. It does mention two contradictions, but those are reported as 6.1.0 which sounds crazy to me as it should have been 5.x.x if they came from the factory. Maybe they were returns?

Make sure the box is sealed on both ends with round transparent stickers (2 on one end, 1 on the other).

Thanks for the great advice. Unfortunately, I missed out on both systems I asked about; they both sold out from the sellers while I was waiting for replies here. I've still been asking around on Amazon, though. The next red/black contender I find, I'm going to buy it right away! I'll definitely check the stickers to make sure it's not a repack before I open.

I just went in to "Elgiganten" in Sweden and checked the boxes for 3DS XL. Many with "Copyright 2012" and I was able to see the serial numbers too so no problem. ;)
I'll take a look at Elgiganten later today. Hopefully they'll provide me with one too. :) Which of the stores did you buy from?

I bought a red/black at Elgiganten/Kungsgatan and just verified it has good firmware. Sooper! :D I was stupid enough to upgrade the previous one, so you will soon find that stone at Tradera. ;)

S/N: SEH1133xxxx
Firmware: 4.5.0-10E

Thanks for hinting about Elgiganten, Orkna!

- Serial: SAF1020XXXX X
- FW: 4.4.0-10E
- Copyright: 2012
- Colour: Blue/Black
- Model: 3DS XL
- Country: Australia
- Location: eBay

Super happy with this, picked it up for $30 cheaper than the retail price because the Box was slightly crumpled and dirty. My advice if looking for a new one is to just message multiple eBay sellers asking for the copyright on box and serial number, worst they can do is say no. Happy Hunting Guys!

My friend's:

- Serial: SUF10022XXXX
- FW: 3.1.0-6E
- Copyright: ???
- Colour: Silver
- Model: 3DS XL
- Country: UK
- Location: Tesco in-store

Out of curiosity of the amount of 4.5- 3DS's in my home town, I called every gamestop within 7 miles. All but one had a 3ds with copyright 2012. I know this isn't a guarantee, but it represents a reasonable amount of chance. One of the stores reportedly has one pink 2012 3ds, and "multiples" of 2012 3DS XLs. Pink seems to be the most common 2012 3ds still around. :P

Basically, before you go running around to various stores, call gamestops and ask if they have any with a copyright date of 2012. Once they say yes, THEN go in and see if the serial number is within an acceptable range.

Hi guys I just found a brand new 3DS XL online, copyright 2012 which means it's a guarantee for <4.5 firmware I suppose?
However the only problem is, it's a Hong Kong model and yes I can clearly see Chinese words on the packaging box.
Just wondering is anyone here familiar with this sort of Asian model? I mean, what region is it in? Asian region? (Does it even exist? I only know JP/US/PAL) Also, most importantly, would a flashcart fit in this so called Asian model?
Thanks!

any idea which firmware 3ds xl preindtalled with Mario 3d land or Mario kart 7 come with?
The Mario Kart one comes with 4.5. I know because I just got one last week. :)
But you should still check the serial number to make sure it's in the proper range to be guaranteed as a 4.5 unit.

There's the Taiwan/Hong kong console and China's iQue. Both are supposedly supported by Gateway. I can confirm for the Taiwan/hong kong model. Not sure about the iQue though.
Oh, and all brand new launch color Taiwan 3ds on the market right now are 4.4 as far as I can tell.

Oh I see! For a moment I thought that might be a fake 3DS haha
I've done some research online about this Taiwan/HK model and some people claimed this version can actually play US games as well... Is it true?

No, Taiwan/HK is a region of its own (ie. with its own eshop and everything) So while some games might allow you to choose to play in English, the region still has to be Taiwan (thus far, there are like 20 Taiwan region games)
