Besides Nintendo consoles, which become cult-popular?

Aside from Nintendo systems becoming popular years later and the games rise their prices, what non-Nintendo consoles also gather the same effect?

I can't really name one, well, perhaps PSP because of its niche selection that it has and Original Xbox's Conker Live & Reloaded (pricey and somewhat rare).

Seriously I can't believe that the cartrdrige of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64 costs almost the same as a new retail game. That's ridiculous!

There's loads of cult classics out there WiiCube - think Atari consoles, most notably the Atari 2600, SEGA consoles like the Genesis or the Dreamcast - they all see their revivals these days and even get modern game releases - not just online, on cartridge/disc. :)

Ah yes the even older consoles do too, Shenmue 1 & 2 go for a good chunk of money.

Although Mega Drive games for high prices? One that pops up filling that category would be Sonic & Knuckles (Complete in box).

Vita will be one.
Bet on it.

:(

Ack, that makes me wanna own a Vita but personally there's no games of my interest to make it worth purchasing. Hope that within 2015/16 they'll bring out some.

I wasn't looking at the issue from the price angle - that's not exactly a direct representation of being a cult classic, sometimes it's just necessitated by rarity. If I were to go for stuff that's insanely expensive, I could just say Neo Geo MVS cartridges or Neo Geo Hyper 64... boards - these games go for hundreds of bucks on EBay... then again, those are Arcade games (although you can play MVS games on a normal Neo Geo).

Another ridiculously expensive system would be FM Towns Marty, with both games and systems going for hundreds. You could call it anything but a classic, but it's incredibly expensive purely because it's obscure.

I got Conker for N64 and Xbox still with cases and boxart. I looked on Ebay and people are trying to sell it for $70 at buy it now price. Its surprising what games are worth so much online, I'm glad I collected as a kid and even now. Besides Nintendo, i've had so many people offer me money on my Dreamcast and Sega CD so there is obviously high desire for those. The gameboy player for GC is wanted extremely bad I've been offered $100 for mine.

I appreciate bad games and systems as well, like Sonic 06 I bought it just because it sucks sooo bad. I want to add a virtual boy and an unopened Atari to my collection as well.

Basically all of them from what I have seen. Though it can take more time to get there and you may find yourself in a slightly different market when you do.

My main response "Ahh emulation/copied games".

What I will be interested to see is how some of the games from the last generation or two play out like in a few years, though things were always mass market they were not quite as mass market as they have been these last few years.

The biggest definitely has to be the Dreamcast: The little console that just couldn't, but gosh darn it, it tried!

Though I'm sure there has to be some value in a Gizmondo by now. Call me crazy, but one day somebody will discover a bootleg copy of "Mama, Can I Mow The Lawn?" and it's going to be worth (at least) one bucket of cash.

The Dreamcast is definitely a sad case of a system that did (almost) everything right and failed anyways. It did really well when it was initially launched... and then came the PS2 and with it the PS2 hype and everyone forgot about the little SEGA box. Still, loads of fun games on the system, well-worth the purchase. :P

Your avatars claim otherwise. ;)

Battle of Z is a piece of crap, I'd rather they re-release Tenkaichi Tag Team for PS Vita because that's actually a superb tag team DBZ game.

This game is cursed to have bad sales starting from the beginning due to the piss poor gameplay it has, but at least this time Namco Bandai didn't scam their fans to buying a game without trying it (Ultimate Tenkaichi -- it's hardly a game more like an interactive film).

Might as well say I can't believe that Action Comics #1 costs 10000x more than a new retail comic. That's redonkadonk!

Old, popular stuff goes for big bucks, that's just how things work. Popular being the key.

I'm not even sure in the case of Nintendo systems that yo could call them "cult" popular, they're just popular, because that's what people grew up with or saw their friends grow up with and want to re-experience. I'd say the Neo-Geo stuff would be a much more culty type of popular. Hardly anyone had one growing up so there's not really a true nostalgia thing going on, yet there's still a small dedicated fanbase absolutely devoted to the stuff doing all sorts of crazy things like turning arcade Neo-Geo systems into consoles and stuff like that.

I can name a few cult-classics (Neo Geo, Saturn)
but I don't know if you can call those "cult-popular"
Oh yes, you would.
  • Radiant Silvergun (Sega Saturn) will set you back by around $150, it's considered to be the holy grail of SHUMPS
  • Panzer Dragoon Saga (Sega Saturn) is another ridiculously expensive game - the game complete with the box and manual can fetch $350 and beyond
  • King of Fighters 2000 (Neo Geo) fetches... $3500-$6000 - that's what happens when there's only 100 confirmed copies in existence. Yyyyep.
This article is a fun read - it's ridiculous how much people will pay for their rare games.

I think emulation is partially to thank for the rising prices of hardcopy, hard to find games.
Quite the opposite, I think. When a platform isn't emulated, the only way to play a given game is to have a physical copy. When you can
"download" it, legally or not, the prospect of paying $350 for Metal Slug suddenly becomes much less alluring.
