Gateway warns you to update from system settings only. If we believe them, and we should, it's not safe to update via cartridge.

I hope that's fixed in the next release, because at some point Nintendo's going to make its updates detect the Gateway so if you hadn't updated by then you won't be able to update at all.

Just want to make sure if it's okay to boot to classic mode and update via cartridge?

They were pretty adamant in the instructions to only update via the settings page, I probably wouldn't risk it unless you don't mind being a guinea pig for us.

System settings is the only way to do it safely as inside the system settings is where the definate marker for it being the EmuNAND is, from there you can update it,
also there is no cartridge would take you to the latest version which is 1 of the main purposes

In the release thread, one way to tell is to make a Folder called "RealNAND" in the RealNAND and "EmuNAND" in EmuNAND

But in the same release thread, they also mentioned that gateway might miss certain calls when updating via cartridge and update to realnand, so I just had to be sure :C

ok well i just want to confirm that the dont go back in settings while updating your gateway mode rule(that someone posted here somewhere) is bullshit i set my entire connection then pressed back all the way to settings first page and was still on gateway mode then i did the update and everything went fine i have sysnand4.5 and GWnand6.3 it worked flawlessly so my guess is everyone having probs with this is they do something else that drops em back in sysnand

It's called prevention.

If anyone is wondering (and you might want to add to OP). Download Play works, at least with Mario Party.

I was able to boot MP using Gateway and send it to my 3DS XL that is on latest firmware and play.

** If you have an unplayed retail game, you should be able to play it and save in emuNAND classic mode fine. If you have already saved on the game on another system, you are risking losing your save game as it reinitializes or you get data corruption message for Pokemon and ACNL

This appears to only be a problem for retail games bundled with the 6.0.0 update or higher. Someone should test with a 5.1 game (ie. Mario & Luigi) to confirm that emunand saving does not cause problems with older games.

Does the classic mode still spoof the firmware update from the retail cartridge?
If not, what's the advantage/changes of Classic mode in RealNAND?

It would be great if it spoofed it too, so users could play retail cartridge without updating or using emuNAND.

why would it need to spoof the update? ... in classic mode, you have access to your updated emunand, so you can play any games supported by current firmware

edit:
without launching gateway exploit I am on 4.5.0-10E, after launching I am on GW3D 6.3.0-10E and in classic mode it recognizes the updated emunand, too and in settings shows 6.3.0-10E without the GW3D infront of it and I can play retail games on it without updating, well, because my emunand is on latest firmware

He's asking if they did a mod for classic mode aside from just booting the emuNAND partition; I suspect they didn't and if there's no emuNAND partition, classic mode does absolutely nothing. Still, someone should confirm this from first hand.

I was taking about the 4th mode he detailed here:
in theory there are 4 modes
Gateway Mode on SystemNAND
Gateway Mode on EmuNAND
Classic Mode on SystemNAND
Classic Mode on EmuNAND
The Classic mode in PhyNAND (real NAND/SystemNAND/PhysicalNAND/NAND/whatever the name of the real one)

I guess there's no use of this mode.

It could have been used to bypass the game's update, without the fear to update the emuNAND and inadvertently update the real one instead.

hmm well I havent tried classic mode with physnand... only with emunand and it works with my retail games, no need to update, cause emunand is updated... classic mode with phys nand does, indeed, sound useless

It seems it doesnt spoof as someone said their retail Cart prompted for update in classic mode without the emunand being updated

It's so funny that you are going through this when I just went through it literally 5 minutes ago. I have just finished copyng my .bin to my pc as I type this.
This is what I did. I realized that I didn't back up my .bin but formated just like you. So I popped in my sd card and saw that my 4 gig sd card was only registered as 2 gigs. Hence, I figured that it was partitioned. The only way I could access the .bin file is to format the sd card (make sure you back up your saves before!!!! using panasonic sd formater tool. Make sure you go to options ans select "complete" for the first option and "on" for the second option. Fomat it. Then, re backup your nand on your 3ds in gui mode... You can guess the rest.

actually this is NOT working for me, panasonic sd formatter does NOT work , there is no option for "complete format" only ones for quick, full(overwrite) and full(erase) , i set the second option to "on" and i did both full overwrite and then full erase, nothing is working, the danm card still reads 2.73 gb for a 4 gb SD card from my xl , i used the link from gbatemp for panasonic sd formatter but when i installed it i noticed it said some weird name for the publisher,"TRENDY CO", not panasonic, is this the real panasonic formatter ? if so it dont do jack shit i cant get rid of the fucking emunand partition ,the card still shows up as "gatewaynand" in windows explorer
