Satoru Iwata in an interview with CVG (Directly!) has said that putting Nintendo's franchises on other consoles would only be a short term fix if there was a problem with the company (which, really, there isn't).

"If I was to take responsibility for the company for just the next one or two years, and if I was not concerned about the long-term future of Nintendo at all, it might make sense for us to provide our important franchises for other platforms, and then we might be able to gain some short-term profit," he said."

You want to play Nintendo's games on Sony or Microsoft's consoles? NOPE! Buy Nintendo consoles.

I do have to agree with Adam Sessler a few months back I think it was, in one of his Sessler's Somethings, he said that if Nintendo was to leave the game industry (which it sounds like if Nintendo goes, their franchises go with them), it would be a bad thing for the gaming industry.

Now, if only Nintendo can understand that they need to market on TV and ads in the streets.

I am not seeing how it would be a short term fix as far as consoles go. In terms of general architecture and security Nintendo have been seen to be lagging behind, companies are quite free to design peripherals for other consoles if they are especially attached to that gimmick and content wise I can hardly envisage any problems in terms of them being able to peddle their content on other consoles.

If Nintendo stops to building hardwares, it will make money from its franchises, just like Sega did, but it is not the case for at least 5 or 6 years from now.
I think Iwata is tired of hearing that Nintendo should put their games on Smartphones. Even I'm tired of hearing that, but I can easily say "mobile gaming is low quality gaming" while he can not.

Why would there be a half decade lag? The portability of modern programming, processing power similarities and simultaneous development capabilities are more assets and obstacles.

Also why is non Sony/Nintendo battery powered gaming inherently inferior?

I couldn't care less about mobile games. I just want all of my games on one console, and not have to pay for 5 different consoles when on most of them, I'm only going to be playing a few games tops. It would be great if I could just buy the PSXBWii3DSVITA4ONEU, play the games I want, and be done with it.

I seriously don't see the problem with Nintendo and their advertising.
In my country at least, the gaming company that shows the most adds on tv has always been Nintendo, there are some from sony but very rarely.

I think the issue with their ads is that they do give them a certain image.

It was a big issue with the Wii where it was basically only sold as a "family console" with "family games". Since then anything mature has sold terribly. Because families buy it and families don't play MadWorld or No More Heroes. It basically made the whole Nintendo "market" casuals.

Now they're at a crossroads where they can't sell it to the same casual market they once could but still hold that image of not being able to support mature third parties. So the Wii U will end up like the Gamecube, a poorly selling console that sells Nintendo software good.

Just the issue is if this general trend keeps on happening they won't be in the home console business for long. Handheld wise though they've always done well and the only reason I see that stopping is when smartphones gain even more ground. Which is absolutely bound to happen but not at this present moment.

Hum... They've had ads for games that weren't very family oriented like Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Zelda and several others, while it's true that most of their ads had families or friends in the background, the same goes for the Sony commercials over here; they either have families or friends from school in the commercials.

As for the eventual smartphones overtaking dedicated handhelds, well, while there's some genuinely good games for android and ios, something that really bothers me is the lack of actual buttons, of course people can buy those external addons, but even so it's just not the same thing. I'll be hoping they keep the dedicated handhelds or at least start adding buttons to the smartphones (which besides a few ones that are actually meant to play games like the xperia play is very doubtful).

I actually like Nintendo hardware, say what you will but Nintendo always knew how to design good hardware. I don't think Nintendo games would be as much fun in a PS360 than in a Wii for example. Just like Sega lost its talent when they ceased hardware production I think the very same would happen to Nintendo

Handhelds aside I guess they lost that ability post SNES give or take a tiny bit of insight with the gamecube.

What would be so radically different about the PS360 that Nintendo games would not work on them?

Sega when they stopped making hardware... did I hallucinate the dreamcast?

So the Wii U will end up like the Gamecube, a poorly selling console that sells Nintendo software good.

This is just the case now, with one difference: Wii U hardware is technically far inferior than its competitors, wile gamecube was even a bit superior.

Christ...this AGAIN? Why is it never (to be read in a childisch voice) "I wanna play my God/Gears of war on my wiiu but those stupid developers force me to buy their stupidly overpowered junk instead. And what if they go out of business? Then their franchise die with them! Waaaaaaah!"

Just look at that list Dark S. posted. Is anyone really thinking nintendo is giving up because of a single red number in their entire freakin' lifespan? (that was 2012...and it doesn't look like that's even a trend).

and the ps2, the weakest one of the trio won that gen, its not about hardware but about the quality of the library.

also saying that wii u has no gaems is useless right now as their competition doesnt even have hardware out

how many times do I have to say this:
NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF VIDEO GAMES HAS THE STRONGEST SYSTEM WON!

That being said, of course nintendo is best on nintendo systems because they design the system for THEIR NEEDS. To think that they could do that high quality games on any other system is silly. what do you think works better: developing a game for a system specifically developed to your specifications OR developing a game for a system you have to learn what it can do first?

I suppose all 3rd party launch games ever are not proof enough for you stoneheads though...
