So this is just a thought. I only recently updated my youtube channel to the latest version which features a really cool thing where you can sync up your smartphone/tablet/ipod touch/etc. so that you can choose videos and make playlists that instantly play on the tv without having to select with the Wiimote.

Syncing up seems incredibly simple and fast, and it got me thinking, if any coders know what they're doing, would it be possible to add this feature to homebrew apps? Specifically, could this be added to something like WiiMC? I would love to be able to choose music and movies to play on the attached hard drive from my smartphone. Just a thought.

i dunno, never used xbmc.

All I'm saying is adapt the thing the youtube channel can do by syncing with your smartphone to the likes of wiimc. If thats essentially what xbmc is, then yes, basically that on the wii.

i think you would be better off setting up a raspberry pi with raspbmc than hope for more wii homebrew of this scale.
or, you know, get an ouya.

That's all done through youtube's end. I can sync up my PC with the Wii's Youtube app using Chrome User Agent Switcher and setting it to imitate IOS.
I do want some way of accessing the IOS youtube site on other devices, like say-- the 3DS browser.

Yeah I can tell its done on youtube's end, but the fact that youtube is able to do that, makes it seem like an app or even just a website could made in conjuncture with an update to WiiMC allowing for the same kind of control. But I am aware that I could be way off.

Youtube has all the content on their servers. Youtube has a client for the Wii and for the phone. Youtube is able to identify that the same user is using the Wii and phone and lets them queue up what content (Available for both devices) should be streamed to the Wii. WiiMC is not an external server that contains content for you to stream. In order to do something like this you'd have to have the Wii running its own server for a phone to connect to, or an external server that it's connecting to and populating with the titles you have available. The Wii already struggles to play video content through WiiMC, adding in a http server wouldn't be probable. Uploading meta data for the content to an external server could be done, but you're either providing your own server (more work) or letting someone else know all the movies you have on your drive.

Regardless, it falls into the category of "ain't nobody got time for that"

I suppose it wouldn't be too difficult to make a web interface for wiimc. Most of the code you could probably just copy from one of the Wii web server apps. With that, you could use your phones web browser to control wiimc, assuming that they were both on the same network (if not, you would have to set up port forwarding and stuff). That would probably be the closest we could get, and even then, I doubt it will happen.
