Unfortunately, no. No way to bypass the region lock and probably the only way there ever will be is if the 3DS gets hacked. That hasn't happened yet and don't know when or if it will be so for now it's just waiting patiently to see IF something happens eventually.

Heh, when it comes to untranslated Japanese games, I'm content with the ability to read kana and sound out the loanwords, though I suppose that only works for retro games which use text more sparingly

Australia is just overpriced in almost all respects.

If you're considering importing a Japanese 3DS, you may want to look into getting from a Japanese provider, and get a forwarding service to help receive the goods and ship them outside of Japan.

I recently ordered a black 3DS XL for 17,672 yen from Amazon Japan, which equated to $182.85 in AUD, excluding shipping from a forwarding service like Tenso, where the cost would depend on the weight of the console perceived by them.
