Heh. I've got a few of those Nintondo carts from my Ebay days for Super Robot Wars games before I found a couple places out in the California Bay Area that I could get legit import stuff from.

I've found that your best bet while shopping on eBay is to look for what else comes with the game. If you are buying three Mario games in a lot then you have a 90% chance that they are fake. Instead, look for a Mario game alongside Barbie Horse Adventure, a screen magnifier, and an original GB cart with marker on it. That lot is more likely to be run by someone who owned and played the games. Maybe they bought a pirate cart years ago, but it isn't someone trying to scam you.

Another tip is, if you realize that you've been scammed, immediately contact the seller. The seller's livelihood is based on their seller rating. They will more often than not issue a full refund in exchange for a positive review. I issued a negative review after I accidentally bought something that I should have realized was fake. The seller immediately contacted me and refunded in exchange for modifying my feedback. I got to keep the fake carts too, for what it's worth.

I just bought this Astro Boy GBA game hours ago on ebay and after reading about counterfeit games I was sure it's not genuine. Here's the auction image:

I thought it was fake mainly because the label looks a lot different than what google image search produces and also because there is no nintendo seal or logo ... but after doing some research this actually seems to be legit. AGB-BTAJ-JPN checks out to "Astro Boy: Tetsuwan Atom - Atom Heart no Himitsu" for which a google image search actually turns up just that sticker art.

Here is a scan from another site and also the western sticker art for comparison

What gives? I thought all official games needed a "Licensed by Nintendo" and/or the official nintendo seal of quality. Is it different for japanese originals somehow?

I used to have a legit copy of the Japanese Astro Boy, bought from a retail store in Japan. From what i can see, yours look legit. If i remember correctly mine didn't have the Official Nintendo seal too, in fact i noticed half of the GBA games from japan didn't have the logo. Did yours come with a box/manual? Where was it shipped from? Try comparing the cartridge with your legit ones and see if you can find something out of place.

Hmm I'll take a close look when it actually gets here. Shipped from and to Germany, the seller doesn't have any other game auctions running (but a few household items) and strictly positive ratings. I'm guessing they're just an average joe who just happen to own a japanese copy of astro boy then. If it's genuine then I got incredibly lucky since nobody else bid and I got it for 1 Euro plus shipping. So even if it turns out to be fake I didn't send a lot of cash down the drain.

From what I read on other sites and Wikipedia the seal may just be a Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe thing. Astro Boy was supposedly released in 2003 in Japan and only later in the US and Europe. Seen in that light it appears plausible to me that it's missing the seal as a licensed game. Perhaps they introduced the seal in Japan eventually, or it's only on japanese releases that have a world wide first roll-out or something.

OK I actually got the game and it is indeed the japanese version. Bummer you can't seem to change the language.

I did however get another game in a small collection that's a blatant fake. Somebody apparently had a fake Driv3r cartridge along with the other legit games.
This is the front, the back with the "warranty sticker" covering up the model number and the back cleaned. Another AGB-033

And the PCB if you're curious

While we're at it, I also scored a bootleg of the Classic Game Boy game Felix the Cat. Note the missing "Nintendo Game Boy" that's usually embossed at the top of the cartridge

I bought Zelda Minish Cap a few years ago - it has a white label instead of red - also opened it up and it has the cheap battery looking thing as well - had no idea until it didn't keep my saved games anymore and i looked it up on google yesterday

I bought a Pokemon Emerald cartridge and when I got it, it was an european cartridge + the battery was still working + it was a real cartridge... SCORE!

I just wonder how can they flash a rom dump onto a flashcard.

If I can get an image of the outside of the card (Both front and back) I can profile it.

By the way, does anyone have any other Nintendo fakes, like GBC fakes, NES/SNES fakes or NDS fakes? I'd like to try profiling those as well.
I've got a fake Pokemon Silver. Black cart, shiny silver background on the sticker.
I also have a fake Zelda LA DX cart, that one was really easy to tell because the print on the sticker was low quality.

I can upload some pics later if you want, that's assuming I can find the carts.

Can anyone tell me if they think this is fake?View attachment 2036
I can see a battery in the top right with a yellow border on it. So yes probably.

I just bought that on eBay like 2 hours ago and that was the picture they had on the listing. Hard to see any major details

Where is it shipped from? If its from Hong Kong or China, then it is most likely fake.

Edit: I looked at the picture a bit more and noticed the sticker is not on straight, so yes most likely fake beside the battery part.

post pics when they come
I got it in a few days and it turns out it's definitely a fake! Here's a few pics

As you can see, the color of the cartridge is closer to the color of a LeafGreen one and the sticker is on crooked. Not only that, but it is missing the shininess on the sticker

Notice how it fits awkwardly in my Gameboy Micro.

The Nintendo logo on the back of the cart looks AWFUL! Not even close to how the real logo looks

Take a look at the PCB. This thing is a mess. Where's the white Nintendo print above the contacts? The chips are on the board completely wrong. Terrible fake
