Just wanted to let you guys know something that sucks........

Wii-U does not support 240p, due to the GPU firmware supporting 480i at the minimum and 1080p at the maximum, so if you want to play your Virtual Console Wii-U (or vWii) games on a SDTV, then your out of luck. On my SD CRT I've checked out F-Zero on Wii-U and it looks much worse than F-Zero on Wii (due to no native resolution support). Its a less detailed, less sharp, jittery flickering pile of diarrhea that's void of scanlines. Enjoy! (or you could play them on Retroarch in their native resolution! (NOT vWii ether, again, due to GPU firmware limitations)

You should complement Retroarch with Mednafen for GBA. Due to frameskip*, it plays some games ''faster'' then VBA next, especially the ''3d'' ones or some like Zero Mission etc. For many others, RA is the better choice. Those 2 combined give a 99% playability of the GBA line up.
And before anyone says Mother 3, thankfully there is an inject wad for that ;)

*This also happerns in some instances with SNES 4.2.9 vs SNES 9X next 1.5.4 in portions of games like Super Star Wars mode 7 stages, again, due to frameskip. RA is way more accurate of course.

Fba core. In general for ARCADE games you use fba core, for CPS1 games CPS1 core, same for CPS2 and neo geo.

Make sure to check the awesome list compiled by groose to know which games work with which core.
Also when looking for roms, search for a FBA romset so that you have correct roms.
thnx for the info

The game pad is your best bet, since the signal isn't as upscaled, it looks better than the Wii U so there's always that. There's no need for Nintendo to support legacy resolutions since most people have non-CRTs.

Hmm, that's interesting you say that. A Comcast representative told me that most of their customers still have CRT displays, so perhaps someone gave you the wrong info on that. In regards to the signal being upscaled, it most certainly is upscaled on the gamepad because the gamepad is 480p and the SNES is 224p. It would look MUCH better with a "proper" scanline filter on that gamepad due to this.

But yes it does look better on the gamepad vs. an HDTV, but - and here's the funny part - not vs. a CRT. Yep the VC Wii-U still looks better on a CRT vs. the Gamepad. Remember, these games were designed originally on a CRT so even upscaled to 480i they STILL look better on the CRT than the gamepad (closer to perfection, though not quite, due to the non-native resolution, flicker due to non-progressive, missing scanlines, etc).

They could have done a better job programming the emulator and its filtering, but they didn't. Oh, well. Lazy programming is lazy.

Yep, laziness. And probably the fact that money is more important to them than accuracy. And add the fact that most people who played these games a long time ago have forgotten how they are suppose to look. Joe Blow and Willie Lunchmeat will play them and "might" realize that "hey, something seems off" but they will probably never figure out what is wrong and eventually forget all about it and continue to play them. Still though, these games will look better PERIOD if done accurately, regardless of who see's them. Oh well, so much for my dreams of Nintendo putting their heart and soul into their Virtual Console (I should have known better)

At least RetroArch filters the screen. Sorry to those who like the pixelation, but it look like crap and filtering looks like how CRT "bled" pixels together. This is the closest I can get without getting a CRT TV. Okay, customized controls and save states is nice, so is off-screen play. Once the Wii U mode is fully hacked, we can do the same RetroArch (hopefully), as that would be pretty sweet.

Believe it or not, for me the Wii is the second best console from nintendo just after the SNES. And I don't say that because their game library, but the homebrew system it came to be. Since the Wii-U "doesn't like" CRT TV's, it raises the Wii value even more, where you can play all these retro games as they were supposed to.

edit: And unlike the above poster, I don't think the WiiU is gonna get hacked soon, if ever, or so nice as the wii... just a thought.

If the Wii-U ever does get hacked, then a supercharged Retroarch with scanline shaders (and probably better filtering) will be the result. But, you might have to wait 5 or more years for the Wii-U to be hacked, or longer. Depends on how smart Nintendo is this time around with their security measures. To the best of my knowledge, 3DS isn't fully hacked yet, so imagine what it could take for the Wii-U.

I've ran into a bit of a snag. Had made a new thread concerning the problem but no luck. Told I'd have a better chance posting it here. I'll just paste what i posted previously.

Save and loading is fine while the system is on, whether it's loading another core, or playing another emu, but when I power it off, power it back on to load a state, it says that it has failed to load.

ex: Saving a state for Marvel vs. Capcom, only to come back later to load my scores, and it fails to load anything.

I've looked into the folder just to make sure there are state files, and sure enough they're in there. I've tried other options, such as loading them from retroarch's own save folder, toggling the option to due so, but nothing.

Maybe it doesn't have the support for FBA saves as of yet?

FBA savestates currently only work as long as the same game session is being played. I don't know why the savestates no longer work after quitting the game - it affects every game in FBA so far.
