The PS4 is next up and yippee, or wait, did you actually mean hooofrigginrah with disgust...
I don't have a stack of PS1 games, my son does. He's a PC gamer though and likely couldn't care less if they play in the new PS4 as he has no interest in using my PS3. He gave my buddy extended loan of his PS2 for a reason, he has almost no interest in PS2 games any more.
Now on the other hand, my buddy is a hard core console collector when he's not playing PC hard core
Some gamers care some not.
Me, oh I wish I could go back in time and STOP ever starting with computer wargames. In a single move I'd be removing years of bad experiences. I'd be saving a shitload of cash. And what the heck I likely would not miss them as I have the bad habit of buying them and not getting around to playing them.
They are too easy to get, even when expensive. But time is another matter.
I do not regret buying my first hand held (DS Lite), but, I likely regret falling into the trap of getting my first flash cart. Too many seductively easy to obtain games. And the day is not any longer here too.
I only really play a few games on it, and frankly I could say I have not minded buying those at all. The few I have played as easy downloads, well the only real downside to owning legit, is they are not easy to carry around. If Nintendo were to sell a DS with a hard drive, I'd be all over that like ugly on an ape. I'd be ok with digitally downloaded instead of bought in physical form. I'd be ok not needing to carry the carts with me.
And lets face it, they have not deterred the pirates any. So not needing the carts would not harm the situation in a manner worth mention.
I have not opted for the 3DS model yet though. The power of the machine has not tipped the scales even in XL variant. I just have not needed it yet.
Free does not = a good deal automatically.
I recently deleted a lot of my 'minis' off the PS3 that I had managed to get via a buddy's help. They are often worthless schlock.
I have also turfed a few 'classics' as they are just not what I remember any more. I played some gmes on arcade machines pumping quarters out to play them. Fun maybe then, but today, sorry but nope, those graphics blow and the game play, nope again, I have grown to want more.
There's a limit to backwards compatible. I often find myself wasting good time playing an old game, that simply has not passed the test of time. Great back then, but today it is just not cutting it. And value to a collector does not automatically mean the game is still good, some just think it is worth a lot of money on eBay.
