Hacking What is the benefits of hacking this system?

I REALLY want to jailbreak my PS3. My brother won't let me though, he believes the system will catch on fire or something.
I don't think so, and I believe that there ARE good things on jailbreaking this.
What are good homebrews, and things that would give you a good experience?

PSN can still be used with the latest hacks, however people are getting banned when detected.

The main reason for most to hack the PS3 is playing backups. Hacking also gives the usual assortment of homebrews like emulators and homebrew games. Finally it restores OpenOS (linux) to the PS3.
Hacking won't make the system catch fire, although it can cause a brick if you don't follow instructions carefully.

it just shows how much you know about the ps3 scene, there is 4.30 cfw and you can go online but there is a lot of risk involved right now, if your ps3 is higher firmware you have to dowwngrade to 3.55 and then you can use higher firmware than 3.55 (4.30) even super slims can be hacked with the cobra bdemu hardware although it's not cfw but you can play your backups using cobras exploit.

It's indeed a risk one would have to take.
But what's simpler then an E3 NOR clip with a PCB that backs the NOR up for you.
Take 4 NOR dumps and compare them with each other.

Then one can always flash it back and the system is ready to boot again.

unless you know what you are doing then yes there is risk of brick, you can however send it off to someone else to do it for you but there are also risks involved with doing that.

You just said it, you still have to start from 3.55 to hack it. You cannot just pop in 4.30 CFW on 3.56+ OFW and install it.

I take it you are talking about 3k3y and Cobra ODE which hasn't released in the market yet. For 3k3y there is no way to dump drive key on 3.56+ OFW and little info is known about Cobra ODE (other than you need to solder extra PCB on Slim and Super Slim).

yes it's not released on the market yet but they have announced that it works on super slims, we don't know what the procedure will be yet.

Pretty much this. I would really like to softmod my PS3, but I'm stuck on 4.30 OFW. I can't use E3 Flasher because I have a phat NAND PS3, and as far as I'm concerned it's only compatible with NOR chips. Progskeet looks overly complicated and requires soldering. I'm either going to have to find someone who can downgrade my PS3 for me or patiently wait someday for a CFW that can be installed on 4.XX firmwares.

you just changed my life, maybe that is the hack i should be learning, i got a e3 flasher and i was just fixing to learn how to downgrade ps3 that are downgradable but now im gonna have to do some research into what you said

i researched just now for a minute or 2 and see that it is sales for $50 plus shipping at some places
i might be able to find it cheaper from another seller

and i see the seller was sold out or taking pre orders for Cobra ODE/Cobra Optical Drive Emulator For PS3, i cant seem to find a picture of what it looks like thou

im sure it will be more than $50

the cheapest way to go is the best way for me, its not just for my ps3 but so i can buy ps3 mod them and sell them, so i have to go with the cheapet way

although i might offer a service to set ps3 owner that have systems that can not be downgraded with one of their devices

yes the E3 station looks promising but it makes loads of claims without any proof, like the fact that it is future proof that it can hack the xbox 720 and orbis, that is a blatant lie because no one knows what the official specs are or what the motherboard looks like, the same with the wii U no one has hacked the wii U nor has E3 come out with any proof that the wii U can be hacked.
