I REALLY want to jailbreak my PS3. My brother won't let me though, he believes the system will catch on fire or something.
I don't think so, and I believe that there ARE good things on jailbreaking this.
What are good homebrews, and things that would give you a good experience?

main thing is back-ups and the Showtime media app
    and some emulators

you will not have the psn, if you hack the ps3

PSN can still be used with the latest hacks, however people are getting banned when detected.

The main reason for most to hack the PS3 is playing backups. Hacking also gives the usual assortment of homebrews like emulators and homebrew games. Finally it restores OpenOS (linux) to the PS3.
Hacking won't make the system catch fire, although it can cause a brick if you don't follow instructions carefully.

No PSN = not a big deal, I don't even go on there anyway. Is it safe to assume that the most recent firmware can never be hacked?

Any firmware above 3.55 cannot be hacked currently.

    Older PS3's can be downgraded.
    Thus FW doesn't matter much.

But knowing me, I'd end up bricking the system. There's no failproof way of downgrading

it just shows how much you know about the ps3 scene, there is 4.30 cfw and you can go online but there is a lot of risk involved right now, if your ps3 is higher firmware you have to dowwngrade to 3.55 and then you can use higher firmware than 3.55 (4.30) even super slims can be hacked with the cobra bdemu hardware although it's not cfw but you can play your backups using cobras exploit.

It's indeed a risk one would have to take.
But what's simpler then an E3 NOR clip with a PCB that backs the NOR up for you.
Take 4 NOR dumps and compare them with each other.

Then one can always flash it back and the system is ready to boot again.

unless you know what you are doing then yes there is risk of brick, you can however send it off to someone else to do it for you but there are also risks involved with doing that.

You just said it, you still have to start from 3.55 to hack it. You cannot just pop in 4.30 CFW on 3.56+ OFW and install it.

Older system can be downgraded using E3 Flasher, that's hardware mod.
Super Slim cannot be hacked at all (no downgrade, no Cobra USB, etc).

I take it you are talking about 3k3y and Cobra ODE which hasn't released in the market yet. For 3k3y there is no way to dump drive key on 3.56+ OFW and little info is known about Cobra ODE (other than you need to solder extra PCB on Slim and Super Slim).

yes it's not released on the market yet but they have announced that it works on super slims, we don't know what the procedure will be yet.

I prefer mods that don't require mod chips.

Pretty much this. I would really like to softmod my PS3, but I'm stuck on 4.30 OFW. I can't use E3 Flasher because I have a phat NAND PS3, and as far as I'm concerned it's only compatible with NOR chips. Progskeet looks overly complicated and requires soldering. I'm either going to have to find someone who can downgrade my PS3 for me or patiently wait someday for a CFW that can be installed on 4.XX firmwares.

you just changed my life, maybe that is the hack i should be learning, i got a e3 flasher and i was just fixing to learn how to downgrade ps3 that are downgradable but now im gonna have to do some research into what you said

i researched just now for a minute or 2 and see that it is sales for $50 plus shipping at some places
i might be able to find it cheaper from another seller

and i see the seller was sold out or taking pre orders for Cobra ODE/Cobra Optical Drive Emulator For PS3, i cant seem to find a picture of what it looks like thou

im sure it will be more than $50

cobra dongle, or cobra ode, this is probably something i will never do
the cheapest way to go is the best way for me, its not just for my ps3 but so i can buy ps3 mod them and sell them, so i have to go with the cheapet way

although i might offer a service to set ps3 owner that have systems that can not be downgraded with one of their devices

im gonna pay close attention to this cobra ode as more info about becomes available

i see other hardwares being released

E3 StationE3 Station is a multi-console supported platform, which we spent nearly a year developed by E3TEAM. It has huge hardware scalability and various software applications. Its main features are:

    A high-performance hardware architecture
Big HD touch screen allow players to use the software easily .
Support for an expansion hardware board. With the custom expansive board, the user can play backup game easily.
Multi-console compatable, such as PS3/XBOX360/WIIU, and also future PS4/XBOX720.
Built-in Bluetooth, WIFI and HDMI interface, support HD Internet TV and a variety of high-definition 1080P multimedia(include BD ISO).
    Perfect quality and attractive price.

The E3 STATION will be the best development tools for developers. E3TEAM will open the application SDK, and provide free sample for those interested developers. The developer can release their work (software or hardware) which is based on the E3 STATION for free or paid. E3TEAM will also reward the good work, we will public later with the Awards Program.

We believe that with the support of many developers, E3 STATION users will get the best experience.

Addition, E3TEAM will release over time various E3 expansion boards which run on the E3 Station. Users can choose which ones according to their own needs, so far the following boards are planned:

    E3 NAND BOARD KIT
    E3 NOR BOARD KIT
    E3 DRIVE EMU BOARD

PS3 GlitcherThis is an independent small size chip with cheaper cost. It does not need additional hardware like the E3 Station. We have succeeded in glitching the PS3 3K and 4K a few months ago, all we need is some time to improve the boot rate.

More special function expansion boards will be announced later (for XBOX360 and WIIU etc), while welcoming the developers to obtain the SDK and E3 STATION sample, to become the member of E3 developer team.

yes the E3 station looks promising but it makes loads of claims without any proof, like the fact that it is future proof that it can hack the xbox 720 and orbis, that is a blatant lie because no one knows what the official specs are or what the motherboard looks like, the same with the wii U no one has hacked the wii U nor has E3 come out with any proof that the wii U can be hacked.

they say whatever they want to get it to sell and people to pre-order.
