Steam announced "Greenlight", their new program for upcoming developers and games. The program allows developers to submit upcoming or in-progress games for submission on Steam, but what's different with Greenlight is that the users vote on if Steam should carry the game, opposed to Steam internally deciding. This will allow many more games to be approved as the user community is much larger than Steam's internal crew, and it also opens the doors for way more entries.

Is this the game where one person stands with their back to the rest of the players and says greenlight! then turns around and says redlight! and everyone has to stop? first one to the caller wins.

That's funny. I wonder if the Fray incident had anything to do with this.
For anyone who doesn't know, Fray was somewhat recently released in such a poor state, it was (and probably still is) essentially unplayable. There was a pretty decent uproar over how Steam could possibly have allowed such a broken game to be on Steam, and be paid for. People were pissed.

This system seems to be directly related to the problem of that incident, that being Steam doesn't TEST every game they release...because that'd be ridiculous. This pretty much solves that issue.

Though I sort of assume (indy)devs could just bypass this system if they wanted...i doubt it's mandatory.

I wonder how they're going to prevent selective audiences pushing for greenlights. Putting out your opinion is nice, but organized vote-rigging isn't. Especially since the audience is already skewed by the participants.

What are you talking about? People get one vote, if enough people vote for a game it'll likely get added (assuming no major technical/DRM issues). If you're talking vote-mongering, I assume only confirmed steam accounts (accounts that bought at least one game) can do this, so I don't think people will buy a game per-vote to make accounts, since even for the $3 games or whatever that's still a fuckton of money needed for any noticeable votes.

99% of fps games will be approved and idiots will reject everything else.
You clearly underestimate the PC gaming community. A place where games like Minecraft or Quantum Conundrum can flourish.
The Indie devs are not AAA developers only allowed to produce what the company thinks will sell but produce an awful lot of quality games. Maybe I'm just an idealist but I hope to see lots of cool puzzle and platformers going through this. We have enough FPSes.
