Which do you prefer for place names?!

Of course but any translator should give you those multiple interpretations. if not then the use of multiple translators is usually a good step. That's where a bit of common sense comes in handy depending upon what game you're playing... but again it's not wise to begin translating any phrases or sentences with this project using a translator whether a person thinks they are capable of doing it or not. I just figured I would put this crap about translators out there since someone decided to jump the gun and imply a person "would have to be an idiot". x_o

I thought common sense would be not to use a machine translator, in general. Not only are they almost always wrong, especially with Japanese, but there's no way you can "clean it up" because it would most likely be wrong in the first place. You can't really clean up something that's already wrong.

Using multiple translators is an even worse suggestion.

But you're right about everything else.

The common sense bit was meant to be speaking of his example but under more than likely circumstances that's right also. If a game randomly speaks of a "mate" and has no intention of speaking about anything sexual than the result of being a "friend" seems likely as the real answer/translation. The use of multiple translators does help, somewhat, when you're doing it to basically compare another translator's results but it can be worse if you're not using it 'properly'.

But yeah... If ya don't know what you're doing and/or trying to translate an entirety of a story... dun fux wit da translataaaa!

Been tracking the progress of this project for a while now. Just wanted to say I am excited by the work you're all doing and appreciate it immensely. I am just sorry I don't read and write Japanese so I could give you a hand.

yes update part being the key - as in any updates like a patch release would be listed in the FIRST POST. (my semi- troll post for the day)

small stuff (I had hoped) would then be here. where as the old thread could be used for the spammy stuff (it hasn't been closed).

It's still open.
It's the third-to-last thread on page 6 of 299 pages in "ROM Hacking and Translations" (obviously).

What does that have to do with thinking this project got cancelled? You gotta admit, it could get some more updates.

I don't usually like to minimod but seriously.... if you have nothing positive to say, then don't say anything. That is all I ask for and I am pretty sure the same goes for these great people who decided to dedicate their free time for this project. Remember, they are not obliged to do it and hence, they do not deserve that kind of crap. And we wonder why fantranslation teams throw in the towel....

Hum... I'm pretty sure groups like Romhacking Aerie would pretty much prove your point null and invalid, you get an update from them like twice a year, sometimes you might just get one update a year, but, their projects aren't dead, when a project does indeed get cancelled, they make sure to post about it, but even so, only two updates a year, but the games get translated and from what I can tell, most people on their site doesn't complain that much about the lack of updates (yeah, I'm pretty sure they're not childish brats that think having a life is nothing but school, playing, eating and sleeping). =3
These things are done as hobbies, the moment a hobby stops being enjoyable and rather becomes something like an obligation, that would immediately demotivate people to work in a translation, since people would no longer enjoy themselves. A lot of translations end up never getting finished because of attitudes like that, people are willingly spending their free time to do something that you will use and enjoy, while you're doing nothing to contribute, just complain, you think you have any right to say "They have a life" is an excuse?
Tch... Brats these days. -.-

Edit: Also, Yugix and Ratsan are still working on this (and whoever else, dunno), I think people should just make a topic and then lock it and only update the first post if they'd like, that way there would be so much less complaints by stupid people. D=

Not to mention that formulating an update post takes a bit more time than showing up, checking for new posts in a thread, and then whining about lack of updates. If nothing significant has been done, the time spent typing up a "Well, we don't have much new to report, but X lines have been translated since last week," post could be better spent working on the actual project, or even doing something else to avoid burnout.

Also, keep in mind that while one guy (usually the project leader or the person who made the first post in the thread) is normally responsible for keeping the general public informed, the project is a group effort, and the update guy might not have 100% current info on what's going on with the project at all times.
