GBAtemp users face a dilemma more than most when it comes to the Switch 2. To update or not to update? Many wait patiently for homebrew, others less patiently, and some are just waiting for a game that's worth updating for. In the six months since the system launched, we've seen Nintendo publish the likes of Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, and Kirby Air Riders exclusively to their new console. For some this wasn't enough. Some were still waiting for something legendary, something special. Something wheeled out for every half-year anniversary. Some were waiting for Skyrim.

It is time to rejoice, and for many time to update your systems, as little-known game development studio Bethesda have today released the latest version of 2011's Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for Nintendo's hyrbrid wonderkid. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition is now available via digital download for the Switch 2, along with a free upgrade path for those who already own the Anniversary Edition of the original Switch release. This new version promises enhanced resolution with DLSS anti-aliasing, better loading times and performance, and mouse controls, alongside the motion controls and Amiibo support of the original Switch release. It should be noted that the game still runs at 30fps however.

Though there is an upgrade path, it's not quite as simple as Nintendo's "Switch 2 Edition" titles, with users required to jump through a few hoops to avoid shelling out for the game a second (or seventh for some) time. Owners of the digital version should see a 100% discount on the new release assuming they own the Anniversary Edition upgrade. Physical cartridge owners however will first need to remove their Anniversary Edition DLC before launching the game and pressing Y on the main menu to access the eShop. If you own the upgrade (but again, do not have it installed), you should be able to download the Switch 2 version for that same 100% off. Once you've added this to your account, you actually don't need your cartridge anymore, so feel free to pass it onto a friend for the holidays!

Optimized settings can get you two to three hours, but yeah, obviously the PC version isn't really built for low power draw. Typical Bethesda, re-releases a game twenty times and it's still jank.

If you own the base game, you can get the Switch 2 version by buying the DLC. I guess you can think of it as a free Switch 2 Edition upgrade for the Anniversary DLC?

I kinda wish more games that support it would also just support an actual USB mouse too. I know Nobunaga's Ambition does, and it can just be a lot more comfortable for longer sessions. I fully support what Nintendo were going for though. Joystick for movement plus mouse for camera seems the ideal in my mind.

Very un-optimized when it came out on PS3. Saving your game more frequently crawls down performance, even the free update didn't resolve the problem. We'll see if this affects the Switch 2 version.

I'm doubtful of that. I think they're waiting on the end of the holiday season for a price hike on Switch 2, and then they'll charge another $100 or so just for the OLED screen. Could very well end up in the same price range as the Gabecube.

on a serious note, i don't have a problem with skyrim being re-released on switch 2, joke about it all you want it's actually a good thing (for most importantly the consumers). but the price point (which i know gonna be steep) on the other hand.. just, no.

Switch 1 OLED screen is beautiful.

Digital Foundry says the new Metroid game looks better on the OLED than it does on Switch 2, despite Switch 1 not even having HDR. Without zoned backlighting you could say Switch 2 screen doesn't have HDR either, and with OLEDs individually lit pixels it has a better argument for having HDR than Switch 2 screen does.
