Hi guys,

Not sure if this is the right section, if not then please relocate the thread.

As the title may hint, I get a black error message when I try to boot up Smash from the home menu.
That error message means that my USB storage is corrupted, so my first thought is that I'm royally screwed and I lost all my save data.

I've already tried transferring smash and its data back to the internal memory, but whenever I try this my entire Wii U freezes. A hard reset is needed to get out of it.
The game itself I removed from the drive, in the hopes I could transfer just my save data. But event hat freezes the entire system.

My other games play just fine. I am able to transfer those games to the internal memory strangely enough.

I've attempted to clone the data of my USB stick to my computer. Haven't tried to clone it back to a different USB HDD of Flash drive.

Any other suggestions as to what I can try to do to save my data? :)

u can clone your flash drive using software but it has to be the same size or larger. it also has to be a 1 to 1 copy or it wont work. i have done this before and i can confirm it works. How big is your flash drive? there are alot of fake ones that report 64gb or 128 or 32 but are really 4 gb drives. is it the digital version of the game? If the flash drive is failing then your our of luck recovering as the filesystem is encrypted.

I would first try to clone it before using it any further or keep a copy of your saves in system memory in case it fails during the clone. Flash drives are also not as reliable as they should be. I use a 128 gb flash drive for the wii u. i make copies of the data in case it fails.

I've used a 32GB flash stick.

Been trying to recover the image to my second flash stick, but that's a 64Gb one. Reading your comment above, it makes sense that it didn't work.
So I basically need a second USB stick that's 32GB large?

I can't just create a partition of 32GB and have it recover the image to one of them? Or does that not work well because Wii U's filesystem has an all nor nothing format option?

Same thing happened to me once with a flash stick, I think it was after updating Smash that I got that error after booting certain games (Smash, Hyrule Warriors, Game & Wario) while others worked perfectly fine. Accessing the Data Management gave me the same USB is corrupted screen so I couldn't backup my games.

After a while I gave up trying and started all my games all over again. I still have that flash stick and an image of it on my computer.

I remember googling and finding out that some people sent their WiiU and storage drives to Nintendo and they fixed their drives. Maybe you could try that.

I think that cloning the original USB contents will just give the same error.

After reading up on it a bit more it seems that this is a specific save file corruption error. Can happen with Smash, but can also happen with other games.
It happens more often with Smash since it's unclear when it autosaves. So when turning the system off when not on the title screen, there is a small chance of this happening.

Only possible fix I read is to create a new account, boot up the game (the game then clones the original savedata for the other account). Delete your original save data and restart the game on your own original account.
Haven't tried this yet. I cannot get to the title screen and the article I found said specifically that you have to go one step beyond the title screen for this to work. However I did notice the new account to have save data created now.

Any other suggestions?

Tried the deleting my save file, after creating a second account and booting up smash.
Gave me the same error.

Game booted up no problem after deleting both saves. Which effectively screws me on many hours of lost playing time.
Still have the backup on my PC, but I fear it will create the same issue. Save is probably corrupted because of the saving glitch.

Anyone out there with helpful magical advice? :)

You're right. My original stick did recover the data so it was possible.

But after starting up smash again, I got the same error message again. Which does not help.
Think you cannot get around the corrupt save data.

Any other suggestions?
