So.. 2008 was a pretty crappy year for the Wii.. but 2009 is looking way better! So, to remind you all of that, I decided to make a preview thread with some good games being released in 2009 for the system. Thanks to Hadrian for helping me with some entries!

For the sake of the size of my post, I decided not to add games already out in Japan (Tenchu 4 and Fatal Frame 4 specially, there's plenty of info about those out in the Internet), only exception is Rune Factory which was written by Hadrian. WiiWare titles were also left out! Sorry if I forgot about your favorite game, fell free to coment about it! Oh yeah! And No More Heroes DS is 2010, so, don't bother! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Release dates were mostly taken from Wikipedia and Gamekyo, so there are probably some errors in there , that said.. enjoy!

<b>developer:</b> Neverland Co., Ltd. <b>genre:</b> Farm maker/Dungeon Crawler
<b>publisher:</b> XSEED/Rising Star Games
<b>US release date:</b> March 2009 <b>Japan release date:</b> already out! <b>Europe release date:</b> October 2009

I loved Rune Factory despite the odd bug, though I have yet to play the sequel due to my DS being dead.

From the creators of Harvest Moon and Rune Factory for the DS comes the first installment of Rune Factory for a home console. In Rune Factory Frontier, you play as Laguna, who's starting life in a completely new land. Your goal is to build up your village in classic Harvest Moon style (Rune Factory is an offshoot of that series), attracting new residents, and eventually earning the affections of some possible marriage targets.

Developed exclusively for Wii, Rune Factory: Frontier features stunning graphics and takes full advantage of the Wii's unique controls to fully immerse players in the Rune Factory universe. Rune Factory: Frontier incorporates an open-ended structure that allows players to choose the type of game they wish to experience. Whether it’s growing crops, expanding the town, fighting (or befriending) monsters or even falling in love, the experience is unique to each player.

I'm very eager to play this one, it looks absolutely lovely its just such a shame that there isn't any wi-fi on this like the DS games.

<!--sizeo:4--><span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><b>House of the Dead: Overkill</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

<b>developer:</b> Headstrong Games <b>genre:</b> Zombie Rail Shooter
<b>publisher:</b> SEGA
<b>US release date:</b> Febuary 2009 <b>Japan release date:</b> 2009 <b>Europe release date:</b> 2009

The very first proper HotD game to not be released in arcades first and this one is developed by Headstrong Games. Who are Headstrong games you say? Well they're a British developer who are part of Kuju Entertainment and features many members who worked on the excellent Battalion Wars games and the team only work on Wii games.

The House of the Dead: Overkill takes place as Special Agent G – the hero of The House Of The Dead series – is given his first assignment fresh out of the AMS academy. Teamed up with hard-boiled Detective Washington, they are sent to investigate stories of mysterious disappearances in small-town Louisiana. Little do they know what blood-soaked mutant depravity awaits them in the streets and swamps of Bayou City...

This is so much more than just another HotD game, its pretty much a reinvention. Taking a massive amount of inspiration from Grindhouse movies from the 70's/80's the team seem to have got it all done pretty spot on from the look, style and even dialogue. People who have played it say that its works very very well much better than the HotD 2&3 Return, which for me was a good game though pretty much a lazy port. They also say how good it looks. Unlike other HotD games you'll be able to use many other weapons as well as the ability to fire two guns at the same time. This one is a definite buyer for me.

<!--sizeo:4--><span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><b>Deadly Creatures</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

<b>developer:</b> Rainbow Studios <b>genre:</b> Little Beastie Action Adventure
<b>publisher:</b> THQ (Can't be!)
<b>US release date:</b> Febuary 2009 <b>Japan release date:</b> 2009 <b>Europe release date:</b> 2009

I've always wanted a game where you played as various creatures, and it'll be more realistic and this looks like what I want. I know what you're thinking "THQ = fail" well they have improved (see de Blob) and they have allowed the developers of this game to take their time.

Deadly Creatures is a 3rd person action thriller set amidst a desert world of venomous terror, built exclusively for the Nintendo Wii. Players will control an armoured Scorpion and a deadly Tarantula as they fight for survival against Gila monsters, lizards, black widows and many more terrifying creatures. Featuring intuitive motion controls and a deep combo-based combat system, Deadly Creatures is a thrilling mix of brutal creature-crushing action and suspenseful exploration of vast 360 degree desert and man-made environments. Gamers will explore this darkly compelling story through the eyes of two of the world's most deadly creatures.

Looks nice graphically too, though some people won't be able to play this due to scorpion/Spider gross out. I'm fine with them as long as I don't have to see their faces, kinda remind me of this chick I got drunk with...eek. The developers are so into this game that apparently they have eaten some insects to try and get into the minds of the arachnid creatures you play, do you think Ubisoft devs babysit kids for the Imagine games?

<!--sizeo:4--><span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><b>Little Kings Story</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

<b>developer:</b> Cing Inc. <b>genre:</b> Strategy Simulation RPG
<b>publisher:</b> XSEED/Rising Star Games
<b>US release date:</b> January 2009 <b>Japan release date:</b> 2009 <b>Europe release date:</b> January 2009

Here is something in the RPG genre that can be considered new. The developers have so far made two extremely well rated and popular DS games which are Hotel Dusk 215 & Trace Memory. They are also working on Trace Memory R for the Wii & another DS title called Again: Eye of Providence.

As King, players will manage and involve their townspeople in the goals of creating this new territory; enlisting them to dig for treasure, build new buildings and otherwise better their community. Of course, leadership is a two-way street, so as King, players will try to conquer rival nations to create a single unified kingdom, while also granting the requests of townspeople at whim. The game transforms the Wii Remote to a royal scepter and offers players the chance to be the best king in the world!

Little King's Story has an art style that is very 'story-book' in look and a magical fairy tale quality that will intrigue and delight gamers. The storyline, visual look, and lyrical music of Little King’s Story, work in concert to transport players to an interactive, enchanting, fairy tale world. By combining gameplay elements from life-simulation, real-time strategy, and adventure genres, the many aspects of creating a vast kingdom come to life!

For us who are slightly tired of the same old RPG/strategy concept this should feel like a breath of fresh air. I am really looking forward to getting this game, looks like fun.

PSP's Japanese monster hit is now on the Wii! As you would expect, the game is about monster hunting. On it's third instalment, there's a big focus on underwater monsters and swimming! New desert areas are also confirmed. Motion controls are there, but they aren't mandatory, the game will support Game Cube and Classic controllers as well, offline and online multiplayers are confirmed, as well as a mode to record your battles and show them to your friends. Like The Conduit, Monster Hunter 3 is another game that pushes the Wii hardware to its limits! It's being in development for a long time now, and according to CAPCOM it's only 40% done yet! So, it's being expected for 2009, but no date confirmed yet.

So, it's some time in the future and everyone on Earth has vanished! Except you (and some NPCs), armed with a powerful flashlight and a golf club, your mission is to find out what happened to the world! Fragile, is an action RPG, focused on explorartion (according to Namco Bandai), the game has some pretty dark visuals and the main characters carries a flashlight during the whole game (controled by the Wiimote of course), consider it a more light, manga version of Silent Hill. Videos and previews show some nice detailed backgrounds and character models, and of course, a pretty well done ilumination. The same team behind Beaten Kaitos and Eternal Sonata is behind this (the character design is very similar btw) but unfortunetly, no West release is planned yet.

<b>Sonic and the Black Knight</b>

<b>developer:</b> Sega <b>genre:</b> Running with scisors.. actually, swords.. which is even worse!
<b>publisher:</b> Sega
<b>US release date:</b> March 15 <b>Japan release date:</b> Spring <b>Europe release date:</b> Spring

Sonic is back, and so is the hope for a decent Sonic game! Well, this is the sequel to Sonic and The Secret Rings, one of the best rated Sonic games in the last years (not a big feat actually), so, even with Sonic holding a sword, there's some hope for it! This time, the blue hedgehog is in Arthurian England, summouned by the sorceress Merlina to help King Arthur to free the land from the evil Black Knight, his speed alone won't be enough to defeat the Black Knight, so, the mythical sword "Caliburn" is handled to him! Tails, Knuckles and other characters from the Sonic world are Knights from the Round Table! Well.. at least there's no Werehog in it.
Early reports, tell us that the game has some adventure elements, villages and new equipment and habilities to be collected (Tails is blacksmith and makes items for you), the gameplay is supposed to be much like Sonic Unleashed day stages but with the extra sword thing. The sword won't be used in combat only but also in the platforming levels, you can use it on a wall while falling to slow down for instance. A mission based system similar to the one in Sonic and The Secret Rings will be in the game, the missions will be given by villagers and unlock new items like gauntlets and magical tomes.
As ridiculous as the story sounds, Sonic and The Secret Rings was a decent game so, there's hope that Sega is giving us an improved version of that. And at least there are no night stages, now.. only if they could get John Cleese to voice the Black Knight..

<b>developer:</b> Vanillaware <b>genre:</b> Sidescrooling Ninja RPG

From the creators of Odin Sphere, comes an RPG very similar to it, but with Ninjas! And that's definetly not a bad thing, Odin Sphere was aclaimed by the critics and fans around the world and everyone is looking forward to this one. So, the game is all in beautiful 2D, with very detailed visuals based on old japanese paintings, the combat is fast paced making it more of a brawler, but don't worry, your arm won't fall out, everything is mapped to buttons.. in fact, the game can be played with the classic/game cube controller if you prefer that, wiimote motions will be used for more sutile stuff like putting your sword back in its sheat. Some sites are listing the game for a July US release, but there's nothing official yet.

Nothing much to say about this one, it's a pretty generic JRPG with dragons, big swords and a girl with a mysterious past, it's being developed by Imageepoch (Luminous Arc) and since the Wii has almost no RPGs, it's something welcome. From the previews out there, what stands out here is the battle, your time to attack is not determined by turns, but by Action Points.. the more AP you have, the more you can attack.. You can heal and attack 10 times in a row if you want.. and have enough AP! European and american releases are confirmed!

Dark Legend is a new game in the Overlord series being developed exclusively for the Wii. Wiimote gestures and the pointer will be used to order your minions around, giving you more control over them and making the game a little more strategic. You point to were you want your minions to go and you can use the motion sensing to grab them by the neck and shake them! Like an evil overlord would! The story serves as a prequel to the original 360 game and brings back a lot of characters from the first game, including a bunch of fanservice showing how some characters got to their position in the first game. Graphics are colorful, full of details and pretty great for the Wii. A new game for the DS is also in production and should be out in 2009 too!

Another MMV game, Kizuna is an action-rpg filled with epic battles against big amount of enemies and gigantic monsters (yeah, Shadow of Colosus, I know). The bosses are supposed to be 10 times bigger than your character and the Wiimote pointer will be used to find their weak spots. Graphics are all cell-shaded with a beautiful special filter that makes the game looks like it's a handdrwan with a pencil. Not many details about it yet.. but, it's one of the finest looking games on the 2009 line-up.

<b>developer:</b> High Voltage Software <b>genre:</b> FPS

<b>US release date:</b> March <b>Japan release date:</b> TBA <b>Europe release date:</b> Spring

While the Wii has a great control scheme for FPS games, the system has very few of those. High Voltage is trying to fill that void promising to bring a true next-gen FPS experience to the Wii with The Conduit! You take the part of Mr. Ford, a FBI agent fighting an alien invasion in Washington D.C. As Mr. For, you take control of both common weapons and some unique alien weapons. The game's plot is heavily influenced by conspiracy theories of aliens and secrets of the US Government.. so, people into that kind of stuff might want to play it for the story. The Conduit sets a new bar for graphics on the Wii, effects like bump mapping, dynamic water effects and depth of field, common on 360 and PS3 games are all present here. Controls are fully customizable, including reticule size and gestures.. wanna jump by pressing 2 and shoot by shaking the Nunchuck? Go ahead! The game will support 16 players multiplayer with voice chat via WiiSpeak and WiiMotion+ for more precise controls, but don't worry, according to HVS, people without the MotionPlus should be able to play it perfectly.

Jack is a mechanic with a chainsaw arm competing in the TV show <i>Death Watch</i>! The game objective is to stay alive, killing your enemies in the most creative possible ways, you can impale, deep fry, split in half, crush and disembowel them amongst other stuff. The game has a true TV show felling to it, with a narrator commenting on your best moves, which makes the game more comical. The violence is taken to an absurd level, making it more ridiculous and funny than gross.. something like Itchy and Scratchy <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> . Game is all in black and white, with red blood and some yellow onomatopoeia. The developers are putting a lot of effort so that the game doesn't look too confusing in Black and White only. Local multiplayer is confirmed, but not detailed yet. The game comes from the creators of Okami, Viewtiful Joe and God Hand, trying to fill the void of more mature games on the Wii, and with a boss named <i>Herr Frederick von Twirlenkiller</i>, I don't see how this could go wrong <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Great topic, and indeed some very good games
tongue.gif

Also the graphics are way better then I expected from the Wii ! I'm quite the person that rates games by the graphics of them, so I really want some nice looking graphics!
Hopefully the Wii can make even better graphics, because I'm not that satisfied yet.

Games I want:

House of the Dead: Overkill
Deadly Creatures
Little Kings Story
Monster Hunter 3
Arc Rise Fantasia
Overlord: Dark Legend
Sin & Punishment 2
Dynamic Slash
Line Attack Heroes

Nice job, man.

I'm still wondering whether or not Sin & Punishment 2 will be a WiiWare game or a retail title. Considering how short the first game was, I'm curious to see where Nintendo goes with this one.

I'm also very curious about Deadly Creatures, simply because, for as long as it's been in development, we still don't know much about it.

Lots of games worth checking out next year, though -- that's for sure. Though High Voltage may be showing folks what can be done in terms of graphics on Wii, I think most folks want to know whether or not Platinum can break that gameplay barrier on Wii; I know I'm damn curious about it.

I hope Nintendo come up with a big 1st party title next year. None of the games in this topic are developed by Nintendo so they could have something big prepared, idk. Also, I'm really looking forward to Wii Sports 2. Sword dueling using the Wiimotion plus will be lots of fun.

I hope Cursed Mountain is good. The game doesn't look too bad. I'm interested in most of the other games as well.
