Hacking Wii Firmware 4.0 Guide.

can anyone please confirm that after

- Installed cios36 rev8 through HBC (had a previous version already installed, but to be sure )
- Used Waninkoko firmware updater 4.0 through HBC
- Then used IOS61_60_shop_usingcios249 through HBC
- Installed IOS 60 and IOS61 (Not shop channel)
- Rebooted Wii

will backup games still run from the disc channel with an original wiikey installed

I had a 3.4E Wii with HBC installed (back when it was at 3.2E), but no cIOS, IOS16 or other stuff. WAD installers did not work on it (ret = -2011)

- Ran the Waninkoko Firmware 4.0 updater
- Nothing works (as expected)
- Installed IOS16 (it let me install it, most likely because Waninkoko's tool does not touch IOS16, thus not installing the Nintendo's stub)
- Ran IOS16 Wad Manager 1.3, installed IOS249
- Ran Custom IOS Installer to install IOS36-64-v1042.wad
- Ran IOS249 Wad Manager (HBC calls it IOS254 Wad Manager), verified that I can install WADs now.
- Loading from SD card did not work
- Ran IOS60 patcher, installed only IOS60, did not touch the Shop/IOS61
- Wad Manager works, loading from SD card works

I've got a chip, so I did not try any sort of softmod loading. Gecko OS works though.

I'm planning to follow these steps because they seem to be similar to my situation,
But I have a few questions:

1. Do I need cIOS to use Waninkoko Firmware 4.0 updater, or any specific firmware?
2. Are IOS16, IOS249, and IOS60 all .wad files? Could these harm my Wii?
3. By Custom IOS Installer, are you referring to the installer linked in the first post?
&
4. What is the difference between IOS16Wad Manager 1.3 and IOS249 Wad Manager, and where would I find these managers?

1. I didn't have cIOS before
2. Yes. They come with tools to install them. Harm - theoretically. Didn't harm mine, as far as I can see.
3,4. I got all my files from yafaze, the difference is the in the IOS# that the executables load (each IOS is a standalone kernel that gives access to Wii's hardware, #s are just different versions of it)

OK 22 pages of reading for a noob Wii dude like myself and I still do not know if I have this straight, so throw me a bone, please.

The fuss is about playing Wiiware/VC direct from SD but in the end the files get copied to your Wii (from the SD) for playing, and then get deleted once you exit?

It seems that i always get error 32002.

So im guessing servers cannot serve the world???

I'm always getting 32017 when I try to get whatever update its asking for to get my wiishop channel working. Nintendo hasnt been any help so far.

The Wii Shop & IOS61 Installer gives me a -1017 when i press a in "Patch Sig Hash Check" when installing IOS61 even IOS60 gives me too anyway. Can anyone please help me for this

I made a mistake trying to softmod my wii and failed. then i used Wad Manager v1.3 and uninstalled CIOS_FIX, IOS16-64-v257 and IOS38-64-v3609. After that i updated the wii but i didnt know there was a new firmware 4.0U. Now when i try to install IOS16-64-v257 again, it gives me that error
(ret = -1035). how i fix this thing now?

ok quick question. i have upgraded to 4.0u and i didn't install a custom IOS first, i cant get any of the down-graders to work because of this. my question is , if i select "set to default" option in my Wii settings will that let me install wads again? i dint care if i have to do em all over again, as long as i have the ability to install them. any help is very much appreciated

@Fakehero- There is no fix yet. The 4.0 update patches IOS16 with a stub, so it can no longer be installed /used with Custom WM.

@Casket- That will not help. Neither will formatting your Wii. For now you are stuck, if there was no cIOS installed before the update. Be sure to keep the homebrew channel installed for when a workaround is available.

Done! its perfect! i put my sdhc 16 gb card and it works perfectly, i still had all the abilities for install wads. mmmmm. now my next move is to update wii speak channel. thanks wolf! your the men.

The installed wad's ARE working for me as long as they are on the wii-memory, BUT, when i move the vc/ww-games to the sd card, i'm unable to start them. a message saying 'Failed to launch' pops up every time i try to start them.

In addition, i can't move the vc/ww-games from sd-card back to the system memory, error message 'The data may have not been moved'.
Some idea?

(original vc/ww-games are working from sd card)

sounds like you haven't installed patched ios60/61. if not, do so and that should solve your problem.

sounds like you haven't installed patched ios60/61. if not, do so and that should solve your problem.

guys... sorry if i sound very noob/newbie about this... just want to make sure i don't do anything wrong... very sorry if this have been asked and repeated before, but i tried reading, and i am very confused...

first and foremost, i have a 3.2U modded with wiikey 1st generation, never gone higher than 3.2U at all. what do i need to do to update to waninkoko 4.0 firmware and still be able to install wiiware/vc? i seen some of them already could not install wad when they are at 4.0 firmware...

and what is cios36 rev8 used for? is it important for me to use?

if someone can give me a step by step breakdown on how to safely install 4.0 firwmare or point me somewhere, it will be greatly appreciated!
