Hi all,

Hope someone can help me out. I am no stranger to chipping consoles but I managed to kill my first wii tonight. The machine belongs to a friend so I feel really bad about it. I stripped the machine down and installed a wiikey. The install went smoothly but when I powered it up all I get is a blank screen. Everything else appears ok, green light, disc spins etc. The chip is now out and it still does the same. Any suggestions? All (both) connections to the drive look fine.

Thanks

Sorry, can only think of the obvious. Those points are small - be sure no solder is touching two points.

best way to trouble shoot this, is to start at ground zero. and see if it works, if it does work without the chip, you may need to look at the Drive Chip to make sure it is compatible with the wii key. Is this an older wii?

Ok, thanks for the quick replies. As above the chip is out and the machine is still not working. There are definitely no bridges on the solder points. The machine itself is one of the very first machines(first week after release) and so is compatible with the wiikey. Unfortunately I never tried the machine before chipping but I have no reason to believe he is lying about it working beforehand.
Looks like I may have to get him a replacement machine.

Gambia, The
try disconnecting the drive. if it still doesn't power on, chances are it's not the mod. if it does power on without drive, then you have a short somewhere.. i.e. spilled solder.

Can you still hear audio when you boot the machine?

If so, then your GPU has become disconnected or damaged somehow, sorry if that sounds bad. The first few firmware revisions for the Wii didn't enable the fan for cooling whilst the system was in standby mode, often leading to the machine overheating and damaging itself.

Perhaps your friend haddn't used the machine in quite a while and had left it in standby mode and fried it, which would make sense as to why he believes it was working the last time he had tried it. If you could ask him what version of Wii System Software he was running, that may hold a clue as to whether or not I'm on track with a possible issue.

Is this the first time the wii has run on this tv? Maybe it's not compatible with the video mode the wii is outputting.

Remember, the wiikey is only on the dvd-rom... so even if you do bridge points, the wii should still boot - just the drive won't accept / spin discs.

Unless you damaged something when you pulled it apart, I'd suggest trying a different tv.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
