I must disagree to some point that not all cartoons are anime , and vice versa. I don't think that anime have to come from japan, but it is mainly the drawing style of the animation that depends if it is an anime or a cartoon. I don't think anyone will say that for example the powerpuff girls or scooby doo are animes, but people will say that they are cartoons. on the otherside animes are mainly made in Japan, and cartoons in the rest of the world. I don't know any animes that were produced by other countries than Japan actually. but avatar does have some attributes that you can find back in anime.
I'm not quite sure you read what I said. I said "anime" is the Japanese word for "cartoon". And it is.
Of course I wouldn't call Scooby Doo an anime. It wasn't made in Japan. I'd call it a... cartoon. If you aren't speaking in Japanese or don't happen to be in Japan, would you call a Japanese cat a "neko"? It's pretty obvious it's a cat. Just like it's obvious an "anime" is just a cartoon. Most of the time, only weeaboos think they're different.
For example, if I saw a pair of Japanese balls, I wouldn't say, "Oh, those are some nice tamakin you've got there." and then see a pair of Western balls and say, "Oh, those are some nice balls." They're the same damn thing. Balls.
Even my Japanese friends call "anime", "cartoons". There really is no difference outside of where the cartoon was made and the language. Just like in the example above, the only differences are the race and person the balls belong to.
And it's "anime" not "animes"
Alas, to each their own. If you'd like to think they're different, I'm not going to stop you
