Imagine you have a website

You allow people to vote for mods

It becomes a popularity contest and the rabble elect a clown to run the place

The place quickly falls apart

There is a reason all functioning websites are oligarchies

This is also why China is far outpacing the US and will soon be the dominant world super power

Thank you for coming to my ted talk

This is true, democracy is a complete failure as a way to run anything really.

Yes, here. I have a question. What system do you propose in order to outpace other websites? What would it take to become mod in this context? Thank you!
Thick skin, sense of humour, mad skills in some relevant area, genuine fondness for the subject matter in general, no time commitments elsewhere such that you can do grunt work or sniper laser beam cluster bomb devastation when unleashed ("we're sending in an army", "that looks like one man", "like we just said" sort of thing).

Ponder those and use them to guide your actions at all times.

Equally some call it indifference, some call it tough love, some call it a disdain for the plebs but if you can brush off the meaningless complaints and only deal with them when it hits fever pitch, and that can also mean squeaky wheel gets gas axed off the cart and a new one installed.

Of course there is also the ultimate rule. You don't ask, you get asked, and anybody that asks (saving those in good standing that are coming back after some time away) is immediately disregarded for all future possibilities even if they otherwise have the stuff.

Sun Tzu (+Tao Te Ching), Clausewitz, Machiavelli amoung others I have read.
Maybe I will do a written analysis of this.
This as well...
Read this in different languages. Also read Go Rin no Sho.
Ponder those and use them to guide your actions at all times.
Okay I will meditate on the two links that were new to me.

Got it.

No asking, got it.

Well... There IS a good thing about democracy
It's a popularity poll indeed, but that would also prevent peoples like WMS or creamu to become admin because they are sons/daughters/xers of the admin
Fixed it for you. I am not related to the admin so if I will become mod it will be based on merit, as far as informed.

...genuine fondness for the subject matter in general...
This is already flawed as a basic concept because every government does this. They set what the subject matter is for the nation because they were influential enough to be elected to lead the country. They genuinely have a fondness for staying in power and convincing the population that it is the correct path.

What do you expect? You have to build a foundation to your concept by setting what the subject matter is. Tons of websites started as one thing and are a completely different sector or business venture today.

While I have a fondness for seeing philosophies of the past that led to successful empires, I find that to be a waste of time for future applications because the greatest empires of today are failing and they are more advanced than anything in an old book.

Population size is the biggest hindrance to those old philosophies. They weren't imagined for the world's size today.

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM

  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
