STAY ON 5.2.0 IF YOU CARE ABOUT GETTING ACCESS TO HOMEBREW SOONER! The kernel exploit Marionumber1 and NWPlayer123 and others are working on has been confirmed to be compatible with 5.2.0 at the latest. As in the latest firmware it will work on. While there is no currrent browser exploit to trigger it for 5.2.0, webkit is still super buggy (not to mention its open source) so another exploit won't be hard to find. They're just focusing on finalizing the kernel exploit now before creating a new webkit exploit. If you update past 5.2.0 you will lock yourself out of the current kernel exploit altogether.

Be patient, they're working on working out all the bugs and getting everything ready for a public release. They haven't given an exact release date yet, although NWPlayer123 has stated that they'll hopefully have it ready within the next two months. Only time will tell. People are busy with their own lives too. You need to account for this. They're doing this as a free service to all those who are interested. Their real jobs, school and just life in general are priority over this. Just be patient, a release is coming....

Kernel exploit will give us access to just about all of the Wii U hardware (except for the Starbuck), that needs an IOSU exploit. As for the webkit exploit, that is nothing more than a userland exploit. It only gives us limited access to the Wii U's hardware. While one could certainly make simple homebrew apps for it, its doesn't harness the full "horsepower" of the console. Emulators of retro consoles is possible with a userland exploit, but don't expect anything super fancy like a psx or n64 emulator. More like nes, snes, genesis etc.

EDIT: However the webkit exploit can be used to trigger the kernel exploit. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe that's what they're are doing (similar to what Chadderz and Beans were doing for their Mario Kart 8 hacks)

I would "think" so, as long as the Starbuck doesn't play a role in preventing that. I know the Starbuck is used to prevent piracy/backup loading, I'm not sure if it will play any role to prevent on-the-fly patching for cheating. Although the Mario Kart 8 mods, kind of show that on-the-fly patching is possible without an IOSU exploit, but I'm not sure if what Chadderz and beans were patching was limited to certain areas of memory or not. If so, a Gecko OS like app may not be possible without an IOSU exploit.

I would wait for one of our resident experts to chime in for a definitive answer on this tbh.
 
I am really considering getting a console only for around $130 on eBay. One can be updated for online, DLC and any new games and the other on 5.2. The one Gamepad should be able to work with both systems, correct?

In my situation the other advantage is if my two boys want to play single person games I can avoid the whole "it's My Turn! You have had it for OVER one hour, gimme! Dad it's not fair! Boo hoo hoo! Dad! Johnny just punched me!"

Might just be the best money I ever spent.

Any ideas on where to get it cheaper? With tax a refurb from N just pushes it to high for my tastes.

I hope we'll really get backup launchers since people really like to use homebrew and emulators, but they need a little more motivation to stay on old firmware, like a backup loader.
Also a way to spoof firmware and play games that need newer firmwares is excelent, it helps homebrews and emulators to have even more users since they won't update and loose acess to them.

The starbuck is responsible for a good chunk of the security in wii u mode. But with kernel access there's a lot that can be done in the homebrew realm :). Dont expect backup loaders (software based) without an IOSU exploit. With an ODE its possible without an IOSU exploit, but thats it.

As far as developing that type of exploit, it would take a lot of time and effort (much like the kernel exploit).
