EDIT 2: Please read the thread-marked update before replying.
I'm not asking for any more recommendations, but if you want to discuss music players, be my guest.

I've been using Google Play Music to play local MP3 files, but I would like to switch to something else. What apps can you guys recommend?
Play Music isn't getting updated anymore, and I have a couple of problems with the way it handles playlists (namely, there's a 1000-song limit on each playlist, and you can't export/import them, meaning I would have to manually re-add everything should I switch to a new phone).
I'd like to switch to something that doesn't have these problems. Also, a personal nitpick: it would be nice if it didn't use a custom-styled media playback notification, because I like how Android handles the colouring on them by default.

EDIT: Here are the suggestions so far and my opinions on them:
Actual Sony Walkman (a newer one, obviously) / Separate MP3 player
This is worth considering, since it would save me having to be able to import/export playlists since it removes my phone, that might get re-flashed or replaced, from the picture completely. On the negative side, it introduces another thing I need to not forget to charge, and if I want Bluetooth connectivity and expandable storage, I have to reach deep into my pockets.

AIMP
It seems fine, just not for me. The interface feels very under-cooked and I don't like the exclusion of a music library, instead having to rely exclusively on playlists.

Apple Music
This is a subscription service, and the app, as far as I can tell, cannot play or manage local audio files.

Black Player

This one seems pretty good. It has all the features Play Music has and more. The free version doesn't seem too limited, although I personally think making you buy the paid version for a light theme is a bit much.

DroidSound-E

This player feels very specialised towards retro video game audio formats. It's fine, but lacks features like displaying album art; sorting by artist, album, or genre; and a ‘recently added’ list. It's also causing noticeable lag while it's running, whether in the fore- or background, and I have no idea why.

Mi Music

Xiaomi-only.

Musicolet
This one also seems fully-featured, but the interface feels too crowded. Also, this app doesn't use the stock media playback notification, so I can't seek back and forth using it. Apparently there's an option for that, I just didn't find it.

Poweramp

The demo version is only a 15-day trial, so I'd rather not touch it.

Rocket Music Player

Based on its Play Store page, it's something I would not touch with a 12-foot pole.

Samsung Music

Samsung-only, but the screenshots look nice.

Shuttle

Ooh, this one is very nice. It's basically the same as Play Music, but the player screen feels more modern and has some improvements I would've liked to see from Play Music. Also, it's a nice touch that it pulls artist images from the internet. I might keep this.

Sony Music

Sony-only.

Spotify
The same as with Apple Music.

VLC

Has most of Play Music's features except for the ‘recently added’ playlist.

I used to use Black Player Ex which has a free version with a ton of features but with also a pro version with a little more to support the developer. But now I switched over to spotify even tho it isnt as customizable (I believe spotify supports mp3s). I would recommend Black Player but I haven't used it in a while so I don't know if it is still being supported.

I use AIMP on my Android Phone and on my computer too. Is very customizable and easy to use. The best part, its free, no ads, or nags at all.

I used to use Shuttle+ but I find the UI kinda outdated after sometime so I switched over to Rocker Player a few weeks ago. I loved it so I paid for the full version. As for my PC, I use MusicBee. I don’t think anything else compares to MusicBee which is why it’s my main music player for years now on my PC.

I, uh.. I use iTunes. On Windows. And on iOS.

But that's mainly because I have an Apple Music subscription. Now, when it comes to playing local music, I go with VLC Media Player. I don't know how good the Android version is, but I can definitely vouch for the desktop experience.

Poweramp.
Been using it for 10 years now?
It was the first player supporting flac on devices not supporting it natively.
I've been using it on almost a daily basis, so I've more then got my money's worth out of it.

I use FOOBAR2000 on my pc, and Droidsound-E on my Android TV. (Would also on my phone if I had one) Mostly use it to listen to game music. SPC, VGM, NSF, Etc. It's Music identical the actual game (Cause it exactly from the game) that has lower file sizes and it loops just like the game. No need to set up "Repeat" it automatically does it just like the game. :)

Foobar2000 requires special plugins to listen to these files, but it's easy to install and it works well. Some come with enhanced features that maybe people who are true audiophile will care more about than me like upscale sample rate, choosing between Genesis model 1 or model 2 sound chip (I still can't tell the difference) or different snes interpolation options. :P

Droidsound-e does mostly the same thing, it also can play these special files too. No need to install plugins like Foobar, they come with it already and are updated with each new version. Only downside is that it's not on the google play store (Yes, from what I know is android only) so you have to install the apk from the github page. :ninja:

Just to remind you, they still function as common music players, they can play your MP3 or AAC and such files too. So Is really not something to underestimate especially with the plugins involved that can make things more interesting. I just use it for the game music. Did I mention they also play from zip archive compression, further reducing file size? ;)

Now if we can only get such things like this for our homebrewed consoles... :yaysp::yaynds::yay3ds::yaywii::yayu::yayswitch::yaypsp::yayps3::yayone:

I just use VLC on my PC and Android phone.

It works pretty well for my basic audio/video needs. Plus it's really useful for testing out my PLS/M3U playlist files for naming errors, before sending them over to WiiFlow.

@AncientBoi, Yeah, believe you can do PSP games as well. But a Pi5 is much powerful in comparison.

Not sure about other models of Pi4 but the Pi 4 B with 8GBs OCed to 2Ghz handles PSP really great except like 1 game I found and it is playable it just looks bad lol Motor Storm Arctic something or other.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Other games I can have turned up to like 2X and all kinds of enhancements, Motorstorm hmmm nope 1X and no enhancements lol

I will admit that one does seem more interesting than the usual Ambernic ones, and I already liked those.

    I dread the price point.

This looks like one of their premium models, so... $150 :glare:

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    To me that seems reasonable.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah it's all choice and that's a good thing :)
